I am looking for some kind of sieve that sits inside a jam pan. Any idea where to find one?

my dp is asking about christmas presents. I made a lot of plum jam this year and had to lift the stones out to a sieve next to the pan. messy. a friend has a sieve she hangs on the inside of the jam pan that she inherited. sounds really useful, but she has no idea if it has a special name or where to find one. I've googled but can find nothing. anyone here know where to find such a thing?

I can't help you with the sieve, but I have found, certainly with plums, that it is better not to cook with the stones in, and that makes it a lot easier.
I stone all the plums before layering the plums with preserving sugar and leaving, covered, overnight. I put the stones in one of those bags for holding tablets in the washing machine, and drop them in to the bowl as well.

The following day, I boil the whole lot up together, but can then take the stones out in one go. It sure beats trying to fish them out one at a time when they come up to the surface on the boil (and missing a few).

I got mine in TK Maxx. It had no label so the guy only charged me £2! It came with a funnel but I prefer my other funnel.

Not sure that helps but they are out there.

I wonder if any chip pans would have a basket with fine enough guage to filter plum stones?

4merly we have lots of cherry plums round here. gorrrgeous jam, but a right pita to stone (often more stone than plum) so stoning while boiling actually easier. can I ask why you leave them overnight with the sugar - does it do something magic?

Grimma, I'm not so much looking for a sieve to filter the stones - I like having some skins left in - but a sieve that hooks onto one side of the pan so the plum juices/liquid jam can drain off.

although... perhaps if I had a big enough jam pan and a small chip basket that would do the job... worth looking, thanks :)

MamaChocoholic, two reasons really. Firstly, by the time you have stoned the plums, that will have taken 30-40 minutes (I make about 12 - 15 lbs of jam at a time) and something else probably need doing. Secondly, the sugar draws the juices out of the plums and most of it is already dissolved before you turn the heat on, making that part so much easier. I think I got it out of Mrs Beeton.
