Grandad was recently diagnosed with diabetes and is missing chocolate and cakes! Doing them a hamper for Xmas from the DCs and was wondering if anyone has any diabetic friendly ideas?

Thorntons do diabetic chocolates. Not sure if they are any good though.

Dietician recommended DP not to bother with 'diabetic' chocolates and the like as they taste awful, and aren't that great anyway as they still have the fat etc. and weight management is important. What she said was that it (ie sweet stuff, not sugar free diabetic stuff) should be an occasional treat and is best eaten together with a meal to slow the release of sugar into the blood. That's for type 2 not type 1. It's hard, I know DP found it hard.

You can get a sugar substitute if you want to bake something, it's called Splenda.

Avoid the diabetic chocs, and the "sugar free jam" it's not sugar free it has fruit in it which is pure sugar.

A lot of recipes online for sugar free baking actually use apple puree which is of course pure sugar.

Most gp's would not object to the occaisonal choc bar, and I mean occaisonal not every week. They dont expect you to live like a monk.

To be honest being overly fond of choc, cake and biscuits is what makes a lot of people diabetic in the first place.

My cousin is 30, stuck thin and just diagnosed with type 1 diabetes...she's avoiding ALL sugar at the moment, but I'd love to buy or make her some treats, as she loves my baking. I don't know enough about type 1 diabetes to know what's the deal with sweet things, can anyone advise and sorry for blatant hijacking!
