I'm hoping someone here can recommend some good Curry recipes, or recipe books I could aquire?

DP loves curries and is a great cook, but commented last night that he would love to make his own curries rather than relying on store bought sauces.

Can anyone offer some suggestions please?

I started with a lovely book by Madhur Jaffrey - brilliant for the basic techniques and for getting your spice-rack stocked. Have recently bought the 'Cinammon Club' cookbook and am working my way through a few dishes now.

We use a lot of Anjum Annand's curry recipes (she has a few books and had a tv series on the BBC) and a few Madhur Jaffrey ones (we have Tastes of India and Curry Easy)

This is my absolute favourite curry cookbook 50 great curries of India

It is written by a very respected Indian cook who ran high grade restaurants in Mumbai etc.

I cook curry a lot (a couple of times a week) and usually use well used recipes from this book. It gives a lot of background info, details of spices etc and lots of different curries from different regions of India.

Plus they are available second hand on amazon for pennies - I recommend it to everyone who is interested in curry.

Once you start making your own spice paste it is addictive - you will never go back to store ones, they are really grim in comparison.

I used to toast my spices and then grind them up in a pestle and mortar, I have recently bought a coffee grinder for 20 quid and it is far easier this way.

It is not nearly as complicated as you think to make your own spice pastes, the long ingredient lists look daunting however.

If you live near an ethnic area with Indian grocers etc, I highyly recommend them as well, not just for spices, but also the garlic, chillis and ginger are far far better in indian grocers, and you can get great bunches of coriander and mint cheaply. And turkish delight Grin

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for replying, I got distracted and forgot about this thread until I was walking passed a bookshop on Saturday. I am now the pround owner of all the recommendations and DP is making curry this evening :)
