I've just been given a lakeland mini steamer for xmas.. Its maybe a bit of a stupid question.. but I am presuming you can do potatoes in them? The leaflet with it says carrots, broccoli, chicken times etc but doesnt mention potatoes..
if so how long for new potatoes?
thanks

most poeple boil pots but they can be steamed - about 10 mins for smallish new pots I think!

don't understand why you'd steam pots though because you want them soft

I thought (don't know) that a steamer helps keep veg crunchy with all the vits in

think life is too short to steam potatoes (and stuff mushrooms)

i use a steamer only, i do potato , it depends on how you like yourveg etc, i like mine soft i have a 3 tier steamer with a timer on it. i do potato until its soft then take them out & mash them. i know they are not as healthy but its how i like them, & it saves lots of pans boiling away.

We steam ours.

same time as carrotts! put them at the bottom though.

About 25minutes for old potatoes if you want to mash them. New summer pots take longer. Pop them in and check after 30 minutes- you can always add more time.

I steam most veg as it's easier. You don't ahve to keep checking that the pan hasn't boiled over etc etc.

OOh thanks, I was wondering this too as I also got a steamer for Chrsitmas (slimming World from MIL. Lost 3 dress sizes last year, and the woman is still hinting! )

Mincepiedermama · 29/12/2005 15:11

I steam my potaotoes. They keep more flavour but it takes longer.

steamed new potatoes taste so much better than boiled.... IMO

edgetop · 29/12/2005 15:42

i would never go back to boiling veg, steaming is so much better! & easier

I've just done spicy meatballs (slimming world recipe) in the steamer... yum! Doing chinese stuffed pork tomorrow for New Year's Eve.... I WILL get the most out of this utensil!

amylou · 30/12/2005 20:42

thanks everyone.. I did the potatoes last night and all worked well - broccoli tastes so different in a steamer - dont think i will use pans much now either!
Spicy meatballs - they sound good - where would i get that recipe from - would it be on their website?

Steamed Spicy Meatballs (slimming world)

750g mince beef, lean
1 finely chopped onion
1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley
1 crushed garlic clove
2 teaspoons ground coriander
2 teaspoons ground cumin
0.5 teaspoon cinnamon
0.5 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 beaten egg
salt and pepper to season

Mix all the above in a bowl. Wet yur hands then form into golf ball sized meatballs and place into bottom tier of steamer. Steam @ 20 minutes.

Apaprently, nice cold for a picnic.

I served with tomato and basil sauce, but they recommen a salsa made of 8 peeled de-seeded tomatoes; 2 finely chooped spring onions; 2 tablespoons passata; 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, finely chopped.

I am going to try a lamb and mint variation on this next week. Yum!

(If anyone is on slimming world, free on original, 16.5 on green but you can count beef as healthy extra and deuct 6 syms. No, I ahve no idea about that either- WW girl, me!)
