Cake recipe requires shortening - what is it?!

I have an Anerican cook book that requires vegetable shortening in several of the recipes. I have no idea what it is! Can we get it in England? Is it known by another name? And/or what might it be substituted with?
Thanks!

shortening is the veg equivalent of lard. yes, you can get it here, can't remember the brand - trexo? it will be next to butter at any rate.

for future reference, and american recipes that call for Crisco are asking for shortening
