If you've tried both, which in your opinion tastes better?

In my experience, frozen peas, tinned sweetcorn and neither for carrots, though if pushed, frozen.

BertieBotts · 19/10/2011 12:40

Agree with Flossie :)

Or if you mean a mix, frozen, and if you can, get the steam fresh microwave bags rather than the bags of frozen veg which you do on the hob.

Tinned sweetcorn tastes better than frozen sweetcorn, but some of the tins put in two much sugar and make it too sweet IYSWIM.

Frozen peas and carrots, except for mushy peas or marrowfat peas which are definitely better out of a tin and lush.

Frozen peas, tinned sweetcorn, fresh carrots (it takes about 30 seconds to prepare a carrot).

nappyaddict · 19/10/2011 12:44

Has anyone else bought the frozen mushy peas? Mine never go mushy!!

I've just had one of those frozen micro steam bags with a micro bag of wholegrain rice for lunch (loads of creme fraiche so not too virtuous) and the carrots were okay, quite nice!

What about tinned beansprouts in water or fresh ones? I always buy the tinned ones, I don't know why.

Also what about bamboo shoots? I've only ever seen them tinned or packaged like this and this. I have seen them as part of a fresh stir fry mix but they tend to be quite expensive.

Fresh beansprouts are definitely superior. I've tried a couple of different frozen mushy peas, with varying success. Individually portioned ones have been best (I can't remember the brand but Tesco sell them - two portions are 99p I think, but they are reasonable portions). Would definitely stick to tins though, unless the convenience/speed is really crucial.

Flossie has it right. The corn should be canned in water without any sugar or salt though. Petits pois quite a bit nicer than normal garden peas IMO.

Tinned beansprouts a bit yuck; tinned bamboo shoots and water chestnuts good.

nappyaddict · 20/10/2011 08:47

I agree, petit pois are loads nicer.

Coming back to this .... Frozen or fresh corn on the cob?

Pease - frozen
Sweetcorn - tinned
Carrots - fresh
Corn on the cob - frozen

picnicbasketcase · 12/01/2012 22:26

Not sure where that rogue 'e' came from.

Seona1973 · 13/01/2012 11:56

peas - frozen (petit pois)
mushy peas - tinned (for dh, I think they're disgusting!)
sweetcorn - tinned
carrots - fresh (hate frozen/tinned)
corn on the cob - frozen (fresh takes about a million years to cook!)

Seona1973 · 13/01/2012 11:57

beansprouts - fresh
bamboo shoots/water chestnuts - tinned

belgo · 13/01/2012 12:00

Agree with what everyone else is saying: Frozen peas, tinned sweetcorn, fresh carrots.

MoaningMinnieWhingesAgain · 13/01/2012 12:03

I don't mind tinned carrots, but they are like a different veg compared to fresh ones. Just like tinned peaches are ok but nothing like fresh peaches.
