this might be a stupid question but if semi-skimmed milk has as much calcium why are we supposed to give toddlers full-fat?

for the fat. Cant say I use full fat though for dd although still bf.

so if your chils is on the heavier side of normal and gets plenty fat from cheese etc do you think it is okay to use semi? He is 2 years 4 months and is 2 and a half stone but pretty tall for his age. what do you think?

According to the food standards agency they can have semi-skimmed from 2 if they are eating a balanced diet. And they can have skimmed from five if they are still eating well.

I gave my son semi-skimmed from 2 as he eats a aton of cheese and yoghurt and would eat butter like cheese if I let him!

Semi-skimmed is OK from 2 years.

you can give semi from 2 years as long as the baby is one of the "chunkier" types.

Its not recommended for petite / tiny / thinner children cause they need all the fat the can get!

cathyspamtaslittlehelper · 22/12/2005 23:20

I would say he is on the chunkier side so will give the semi skimmed a go! [amile]

It's not just the fat that's important. Some of the vitamins in milk will be lost when it is skimmed.

PantomimEDAMe · 22/12/2005 23:30

Btw, have just switched to semi-skimmed for ds who is 2 1/2 - he eats a varied diet including yoghurt etc. Makes life so much easier not having to buy two kinds of milk!

DD is nearly 3 and still has full fat milk as she is rather slim, despite drinking a pint of milk per day, a yoghurt, loads of cheese. She eats a very good diet, even eats veggies like Brocoli and spinach but still seems rather slim....

Not like her mum
