I dont have one of those 'burning bin' thingies, so How can I get them roasted?

I think I read somewhere that a disposable BBQ is good, but I dont have one of those either!

Go for a high-ish heat... Gas 7... cut a slot in the skin and bake for about 15 minutes on a tray. You'll know when they're ready because they will smell 'done' and the fllesh will be soft/fluffy and come away from the skin quite easily. Discard any that are discoloured or have a hole in them.

AmberLeaf · 14/10/2011 13:34

Thank you Cogito

Gonna do them later!

In the hole ridden pan than clutters up my kitchen the rest of the year.

I cook them in the loosest sense of the word, more like burn them.

Stupid pan.

Jdore · 16/10/2011 18:14

I'm afraid I cheat and buy frozen ones for stuffings and do them on the hob. For roasted ones I buy them from the man outside the cake shop.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 17/10/2011 07:19

Why was it a disaster?

AmberLeaf · 17/10/2011 12:59

Well......They didnt look right after 20 mins so I left them in for another 10, a few of them were too burnt [ie rock hard] and the ones that werent were strange in texture, sort of spongey and they looked a bit grey?

Im wondering if they were not very good chestnuts, but Im willing to accept im just a crap chestnut cooker!

on a shovel in the fire box of a steam engine, but I realise that my not be helpful Grin

AmberLeaf · 17/10/2011 13:04

Grin well, currently there seems to be as much chance of that as there is of me managing to cook them successfully so...thanks!

Try a fresh batch. Spongey and grey usually means 'old'. And they would be burnt (or dried out at least) after half an hour. Don't give up.

AmberLeaf · 17/10/2011 19:00

Ok maybe there's hope then, I'll get some more this week.

Wil report back!

Inspired by this thread I cooked some this evening :) They were quite small so were done after 10 mins rather than 15. When done, the cut you've made in the top opens up and peels back a little.
