What have you made from the Domestic Goddess book that was good?

Had a flick through Nigella Lawson's DG last night and realised I've made a few things that didn't turn out quite right. Am I just crap at baking or is it a not-very-good book? The pictures are dreamy, of course, but everything ends up a bit...bland - I have to double or treble the amount of spice, for instance. What am I doing wrong?

Banana bread the best thing. Courgette cake made me feel ill (but is good for non-dairy people).

The Raspberry plate triffle thing, mouth is watering just thinking about it. The lemon loaf is dreamy (when done in the trifle and on it's own). Millionaires shortbread always works out well. I'm sure I've tried one or two things out of the children's section which were nice too. The iced ginger cake (traybake one) was nice but I got the icing mixture wrong and it ended up mixing too much with the dark cake and was a bit sludgey looking but still very tasty.

I always use the fairy cake recipe from DG and the jam doughnut muffins are yummy, but fattening and a bit faffy.

GhostofChristmasNatt · 19/12/2005 10:55

The brownies, although her approach with chocolate things is a bit "throw enormous amount of chocolate and butter in and will be great" and the choc things do end up a bit same-y.

MrsSpoon · 19/12/2005 10:57

Mmmm, I made the buttermilk birthday cake recipe (sure it was from DG) and made it into a clown cake for a party a few years back and despite have burnt it slightly it was delish and loads commented on how nice it was.

Made the Madera cake and wasn't overly impressed either way.

MrsSpoon · 19/12/2005 10:58

Oooh the Brownies are lovely but she uses loads of eggs, have made them a few times but felt I had to stop as they were soooo calorific!

Cadeauxbury · 19/12/2005 11:03

The banana muffins are great and the kids love making them. The store cupboard chocolate cake is yummy (the one with marmalade - meant to be orange except I use lime and it works beautifully). I think that the suet free mince meat might be from there and that is good too. Is the chocolate pavlova with raspberries in that? Its becoming a regular fattening feature in my house

Tabs · 19/12/2005 11:25

The banana loaf, the sticky toffee pudding and the lemon and syrup sponge pudding are all great. All v fattening though, so haven't made for a while!

Is the steak and kidney pudding in DG too - def a Nigella one that is great, but takes loads of effort to make IIRC.

Lemon drizzle cake.
Fried peanut butter and banana sandwich

Enideepmidwinter · 19/12/2005 11:39

no it isnt very good - the recipes are a bit unreliable

I make the breakfast pancakes from there every sunday and they are great

the boston cream sponge is also good

but I tend to use more old fashioned books for cakes, Delia, Margaret Costa etc. A friend gave me a basic chocolate cake recipe which is totally brilliant and I have made it 3 days before I wanted to ice it with no loss of moistness so I tend to make that a lot

wewishyouaClaryChristmas · 19/12/2005 11:45

I think some recipes are a bit unreliable.

However we have loved the choc orange cake (use aprcot jam instaed too); Granny Boyd's biscuits (sandwich with buttercream); number cut-out biscuits (vanish at B/day parties) and buttermilek cake of course.

walkinginawelshmumwonderland · 19/12/2005 11:47

Brownies
Birthday cake
Fairy cake
Lemon drizzle cake
All lovely but the absolute best was the christmas pudding - and the vodka for flambeing was a great tip as it made a fab flame which lasted ages

MrsSpoon · 19/12/2005 12:06

If the breakfast pancake recipe is the same as the one in Nigella Bites, it is gorgeous with lashings of maple syrup.

Gillian76 · 19/12/2005 12:11

We love the cheese and onion pies

Gillian76 · 19/12/2005 12:11

Oh but the fudge was a disaster

Enideepmidwinter · 19/12/2005 12:11

ooh oooh

the boxing day bacon and egg pie (made with left over ham chez enid) is divine especially as she suggests with cornichons and a glass of cold beer

harpsiheraldangelssing · 19/12/2005 12:20

the very sound of courgette cake makes me feel ill
queasy

ISawFrannyandZooeyKissingSanta · 19/12/2005 12:46

Do you think you could be pregnant again, HC? You seem a bit nauseous and sensitive today...

harpsiheraldangelssing · 19/12/2005 12:59

courgettes = yes
cake = yes
courgette in cake.... well that's just against all the laws of nature isn't it?
though you migth be right - have just been sobbing along to that JCB song

ISawFrannyandZooeyKissingSanta · 19/12/2005 13:00

That's just because you know you will never get to shag the lead singer.

harpsiheraldangelssing · 19/12/2005 13:06

you don't know that! he might have a penchant for mumsy middle aged women slightly ravaged by childbearing..
actually I just relised I am the only woman in the country not to have the domestic goddess book, have one of her otehrs and can never find anythig to cook in it. Only ever cooked her ham in coca cola, which is admittedly fab
more of a delia girl myself

ISawFrannyandZooeyKissingSanta · 19/12/2005 13:07

I am being chucked off the pc so must continue my taunting later, HC....

harpsiheraldangelssing · 19/12/2005 13:09

oh don't gooooo

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 19/12/2005 14:08

Lemon syrup loaf and the banana bread have never failed me yet. The lemon one is simply superb.

and if you've got Feast, you have to make the chocolate gingerbread. It is to die for! have never bothered with the icing though.

spykid · 19/12/2005 14:14

Brownies...yum ( I added dried cranberries)
Madeira cake...smells sooo delish when cooking
cupcakes, lots of em!
Victoria sponge
Lemon raspberry plate trifle..to die for!
Kiddies butter cut out biscuits
Coca cola cake...fabbo, always a hit
Have not had a bad recipe yet

bosscatsroastingonanopenfire · 19/12/2005 14:37

I've just read her pastry recipe and she says "add water", well how much? I've just made a load and it looks like a disaster.
