Slow cooker - yes or no?

Been reading the casserole/stew threads and people keep mentioning slow cookers. Are they really good? Are they very big to store? What else can you do in them?

YES
A BIT BIG

BLOODY FANTASTIC!

mine is in the cupboard gathering dust. It is enormous and there are two adults and one small child in this house. If I fill it with casserole it would feed the neighbouhood.

They are good, and they can vary in size but are mostly quite bulky.

Ideal if you have a bit of time in the morning for preperation (which I don't really).

Good for casseroles, stews, curry, soup, meat.

There are a lot of recipies online or if you search for old threads.

Prep the night before

Bung it all in first thing

Forget about it

Eat a DELICIOUS meal when you want!

They are handy in terms of organizing your time because you can plan to cook food while you are out, but there's just as much preparation (chopping etc.) as there is in normal recipes.

Have just bought a tefal one for mil which is a slow cooker/seamer/ricecooker all in one and not much bigger than a large saucepan.

flutterbeedreaminofawhitexmas · 16/12/2005 21:03

They are fab, I didn't realise that there where any recipies on here though I shall have to investigate.

Deffo worth getting one.

I love my slow cooker, it is so economical as it uses less than a energy of a lightbulb to cook a great meal in for the whole day.

I get lamb shanks from the butcher for £1.80 each and stick in what ever veg you have couple of tins of tomotoes, mush, peppers and anything else you fancy.

daisy1999 · 23/12/2005 15:21

excellent got mine on now!!

JiminyCricket · 23/12/2005 15:26

yes chicken cacciatire in it now. you can prepare all in the crockpot the night before then put it on in the morning. pot roasts are lovely to come home to.

jellyjelly · 23/12/2005 22:57

How do you make that cricket?

JiminyCricket · 24/12/2005 14:06

put
diced chicken breasts/or whole chicken breasts
a bit of chopped up bacon
a chopped onion
garlic (optional)
tin of chopped tomatoes
large splash of red wine
all in the slow cooker on the 'Lo' setting for about 8 hours
tastes even nicer than it sounds as its very 'more-ish'

jellyjelly · 24/12/2005 16:58

Might try this out with turkey after christmas.
