Satsumas and MIlk.......

LadyTophamInAChristmasHatt · 14/12/2005 18:23

Ds3 just ate his first satsuma, well he scoffed it actually but now I've realised it's nearly bed time and so bedtime means milk.

Will it curdle?
Am I in for sick filled night if he has his milk?

Help me oh ladies on MN land.

oh er - once had a car full of vomit after ds1 had fresh orange juice nad milk with his hotel breakfast

LadyTophamInAChristmasHatt · 14/12/2005 18:26

ohhh no!

He'll be inconsolable(sp?) if he can't have milk.

Shit!

ds just had a tangerine and I'm about to give him a big cup of warm milk.

i'd never have thought of it curdling...

Gillian76 · 14/12/2005 18:28

What about orange juice and cereal at breakfast? I think it mkight curdle in his stomach, but there's enough acid in there normally, I don't think it will make him sick.

IOTAnnenbaum · 14/12/2005 18:29

I don't know the innns an outs of it, can only speak from one unpleasant experience

LadyTophamInAChristmasHatt · 14/12/2005 19:18

It's been over an hour since he ate it so do you think it'll be ok for milk now??

thecattleareALOHing · 14/12/2005 19:19

i am sure this is an old wives tale

mumfor1sttime · 14/12/2005 19:22

This is a new one on me!

colditz · 14/12/2005 19:23

We have had this thread before, I'm sure, and my answer is nO NO NO it will not, it isn't true, it is an old wives tale, it is acid that makes milk curdle, and acid is in the stomach already, so if this milk/oranges thing was true, we would all throw up milk all the time.

LadyTophamInAChristmasHatt · 14/12/2005 19:24

TBH I thought that too Aloha but I still have panics every time one of them asks for something citrusy then dairy.

As soon as I read the thread title I froze!! It may have happened over 4 years ago but I can still smell it as if its just happened .

When DD was about 18m, DP fed her a satsuma and a yoghurt after her tea. Needless to say she was sick a few hours later. It smelt gross/rancid/foul/sour/curdled and we had to rinse semi-digested satsuma segments out of her sheets, PJs and hair.

It will haunt me forever.

Good luck LTH -hope DS is ok

NannyL · 14/12/2005 19:31

i regularly eat satsumas and drink milk without being sick!

however when i was younger if i had orange juice with my breakfast cereal (with milk on) and we did more than the shortest drive i would be carsick and it would seem to be 'curdled milk an OJ' (sorry for TMI!)

LadyTophamInAChristmasHatt · 14/12/2005 19:36

Well, he's drunk it now so if he's going to be sick I'm in for a long night.

I nearly named this thread "I'm really not sure if this is an old wives tale but DS has just eaten a sutsuma and it's bedtime milk soon, do you think he'll be sick?"

"Milk and Sutsumas" was much easier.

If its any consolation LTH when DD was sick it was only the once, not all night, but there was rather a lot of it!

LadyTophamInAChristmasHatt · 15/12/2005 07:07

Phew, a sick free night.

But a very bloody early morning -5:20am and I was still awake and 1:30am.

I feel like shite!

Acid in the stomach is nearly a pH of 1 (as acid as you get) Oranges are more of a pH of about 4 (IIRC) Neutral is 7.

So if milk and citrus was a problem then any milk would be impossible to drink because of the acid in the stomach

LadyTophamInAChristmasHatt · 15/12/2005 07:17

Ohhh, that's what I needed last night MB......the science of it all

thanks M'dear.

What is so sad is that this is how i think on a day to day basis! My kids pity me! Overyone in their class pitys my kids!

When we went on holiday there was a terrific beach with the most wonderful sand dunes and I found myself muttering about climax cominities and sucession of plant life. On the beach there were beuatiful pebbles and I foundmyself separatibg them into sedimentarty and metamorphic ! My dd just sighed and said 'Mummy, do you have to?' Sad thing is I do

sevensuzyswongsaswimming · 15/12/2005 07:33

bless you martianbishop, bless you and your sciencey classifying ways

Blandmum · 15/12/2005 07:36

I'm just one of those sad, spoddy types!

Hay ho, off for another days sad classification...It is great to have a job that induges my passions!

Today I have a nice picture of a gangrenous foot to show my year 11s, we are doing vascular disease and it grabs their attention I can tell you!

LadyTophamInAChristmasHatt · 15/12/2005 07:52

Well, I know my ds1+2 would love to go to the beach with you. They are always searching for nice pebbles and they'd love to know which type they were (even if they don't know anything about sedimentarty and metamorphic yet, they're only 4+6)

They'd love you!!

THANKYOU MARTIANBISHOP

I have been saying this to my mother for years, she would never let us have milk within 2 HOURS of orange anything, even squash.

Harrrrrr I knew I was right haaaarrrrrrr

Blandmum · 16/12/2005 06:44

LOL!

Glad to be of service!

Don't expect logic to work with your mother tho, if she is like mine then she will just tell you not to be so silly and that she knows best
