Any reason not to give green tea to a toddler???

if you are happy to let them have ordinary tea, then green tea is ok too. only problem i can think of would be caffiene, green tea contains the same amount as ordinary tea. i would probably make it weaker than normal for a toddler.

dh gives them milky tea I dont like it because it has caffeine, tannin etc in.

I mean dx of course

Tea apparently interferes with the absorption of zinc, which can be detrimental to development - that applies whether it's green tea or bog-standard PG. I'm sure you'd need to drink an awful lot of it for it to have a detrimental effect but that and the fact that it contains caffeine was enough reason for me not to give dd tea.

No I wouldn't let him have ordinary tea! I didn't realise that green tea had caffeine it. Thanks.

I was hoping that green tea would be like the fruit/herbal ones that are OK for young children, you see! but obviously not.

The herbal ones don't have tea in them, green tea does. Fennel tea is apparently quite a nice one for babies and toddlers, if you wanted to try something like that.

FrostyTheGloworm · 13/12/2005 12:05

do mean the bottle of cold drink? as opposed to a cup of green tea?

if so the drink is mostly water and sugar etc, not great for a toddler.

how about decaffinated green tea?

feastofsteven · 13/12/2005 12:10

the drink I'm afraid, Frosty! Will try the fennel tea I think instead

rooboish tea is more similar in taste and appearance to ordinary tea than the herbal ones.
it has no caffiene.
in africa mothers feed it to young babies for its health benefits. have never tried it but it suppossed to be quite nice.

I am not keen to start the kids on tea or coffee. The caffiene is a drug, they will have plenty of time to develop bad habits later on.
