Grated apple and alcohol

Hallgerda · 12/12/2005 12:15

SantaClausFrau - you could also try adding glace cherries and dried apricots (the dark unsulphured ones are nicer).

PeachyPlumFairy · 12/12/2005 12:21

I always go for grated apple, pear and chopped dried apricot.
I don't pretend it's my own though, it just tastes nice.

I didd once take some M&S ones to Mum's pretending they were mine, but after the praise owned up- more wind up then lie.

littlechristmaself · 12/12/2005 13:15

try a little cinniman

PeachyPlumFairy · 13/12/2005 19:04

According to an article I read today- marmalade added is nice.

In order to get rid of the Robertson's taste, why not just make the mincemeat yourself? I have a recipe (in the Good Housekeeping Vegetarian Cookery book) that involves dried fruit of various varieties (the usual raisins/currants/sultanas, candied peel, apricots, (I add glace cherries) spices, brandy (but I substitute rum), orange rind and juice, sugar and some marmalade (there may be some other things I've forgotten, but it does not involve suet.) Essentially, you just mix it all together and leave it. You can bottle it up into jars if you can be bothered - I just make mince pies! There are lots of different recipes around in various books, and they're usually about that easy. I think it's a myth that you have to leave it for months - I imagine dried fruit has consumed all the booze it's going to within a few days. So why not give it a try? You have nothing to lose but that vinegary taste!
