marzipan question to foodies

when icing my christmas cake do i have to do a marzipan layer or can i ice it without. No-one in our family likes marzipan that much and i thought i would leave it out. Is there a point to the marzipan? does anyone know? help please kind baking people...

I think if you don't put marzipan on, the cake will discolour the icing.

I only eat fruit cake because of the marzipan.

In wedding cakes it denotes the sweet and sour aspect of marriage (with the icing as well)

Not sure what it means in Xmas cakes but you can leave it out I am sure.

Yes, the cake will discolour the icing. This won't be so much of a problem if you ice it very close to Christmas though. And I'm sure there's an alternative that I can't remember!
