My DD (3.5) eats late with us, at 6:30 when Dh is home from work. At nursery they have a light snack/tea around 3:13-3:30 time, so I tend to give her a small snack at home around that time too. I like us to all eat together.

handlemecarefully · 05/12/2005 15:43

Oh Maddhur - stop pretending to be all indignant and disapproving!

I can't find Countess's salmon linguine recipe from the other week. It was hidden in a thread. Any ideas anyone?

kelly, goat has quite a 'gamey'lamb/mutton type taste. You have to be careful re bones sometimes. Curry goat is delicious!

If you have a WI takeaway near you give it a go and see what you think

sal - it's our first month of planning, if I don't fancy something then we were gonna swop day's during the week.

peckarollover · 05/12/2005 19:32

if you really dont fancy something then yes be spontaneous! The meal planning police arent going to come and give you community service!!

I find that is never a problem as Im just relieved I dont have to think about it.

I cant believe you all plan
I just cook whatever or perhaps think about it on the way home
I'm just not that organised

does it really help?
dont you buy smae sort of food each week so can rustle something you fancy up?

ENIDeepMidwinter · 05/12/2005 19:40

ooh no planning is lush

means you can relax a bit

Glitterygook · 05/12/2005 19:42

Monday - chicken (and bacon) caesar salad and garlic bread
Tuesday - spaghetti bolognese
Wednesday - Tesco finest fish pie and vegetables
Thursday - Ravioli and garlic bread
Friday - Cod, home made chips and peas
Saturday - Brother and SIL over, not planned that yet but deffo cocktails
Sunday - full on roast - friends over for visit to Tatton, a go on the Xmas carousel and a hearty feast

MistletoeMiggins · 05/12/2005 19:55

perhaps we're just too predictable

Bozza · 05/12/2005 21:20

Right so I should leave work at 4.50, collect DS at 5.30, collect dd at 5.40 get home at 5.50 and then decide what to make for tea?

Bozza · 05/12/2005 21:25

Actually what I do is defrost something I have made previously. But even then I have to get it out about 7.30 am.

MarsyChristmas · 05/12/2005 21:51

I plan cos I have 5 kids and can't be ars*d to decide. Only been planning for a few months now, but it's a lifesaver.

If I don't fancy what's on the menu for the day, I make something else, but to be honest I try to vary the weeks so that I don't get bored. DS1 chooses what we eat on Thursdays cos that's when he cooks. DD1 is gonna start cooking on Fridays, as that's the best day for her so she'll be choosing for those days.

If everyone is out (big kids I mean), well the Chinese is only across the road. YUM!

handlemecarefully · 06/12/2005 09:04

Planning definitely takes the stress factor out of feeding a family. You don't have to give meal times much 'head space' once you've done your plan, and tailoring your shopping list to your menu plan means that you don't over order and waste fresh food.

blueshoes · 06/12/2005 09:17

Planning menus in the blueshoes household is because we can only manage time for one big supermarket shop a week (weekend), with both of us working. With the following week's menu penciled into the calendar by Friday, we will buy the ingredients by Friday, plan what we can cook in advance on the weekend, how many portions to freeze for the week, what can be cooked on the day itself, taking into account and making adjustments for unexpected leftovers, night functions, expected busyness on specific days. Also, dh insists on proper cooked meals for dinner, but he prepares 50% of them so that's ok.

Dd eats what she eats - ham, cheese, cereal with milk!

I am all for spontaneity - can't bear to eat certain scheduled meals myself. On the days where we are unexpectedly caught flatfooted, I relish a pot noodle myself
