"I don't like eating olives at school because everyone laughs at me"

This is my DS's explanation for why he hasn't eaten the olives I've put in his lunchbox.

Deeply peeving, as he's such a fussy little sod and olives are one of the few vegetables that he will actually eat like sweets. Until now. He'll eat them at home all the time, but at school, what's obviously happened is incredulity from other kids which has made him self-conscious about eating them.

What a PITA.

My dd doesn't start her primary school until next September but we've been to look around and talk to the head. I felt slightly peturbed when the head mentioned that they have guidelines about what should go in packed lunches (i.e. no crisps, sweets etc) not because I intended to feed dd loads of those, just a vague civil liberty thing.

But reading this I am now hugely relieved they are so prescriptive (I guess they can be - small village primary)

moondog · 05/12/2005 13:25

Yes Maddhur.
With me it's all nappies, norks and and weanig.

I have no interest in anything else at all.
24 hour alpah mom-that's me that is.

handlemecarefully · 05/12/2005 13:25

What I mean is dd won't be ridiculed over her carrot batons as they will be the norm!

Well what really irritates me is that school specifically asks parents not to send things like chocolate, crisps etc. in lunchboxes, and some parents still do, all the time.

It really does make it difficult for them as wants to feed their kids properly. Because of course poor old DS feels hard done by sitting with kids who are eating crisps, sweets, chocolate and turkey shaped cheese-flavoured shite. Luckily, he doesn't like the cheesy stuff!

In that case Caligula - is it worth raising it with the Head Teacher to see if he / she is prepared to do something (perhaps a reminder letter to all parents, discussion at school assembly etc)

they confiscat ethem at ours

handlemecarefully · 05/12/2005 13:40

There's only about 60 kids in total at dd's primary school when she starts so I'm hopeful re policing of lunch boxes

ENIDeepMidwinter · 05/12/2005 13:52

hmc ours is the same no chocolate sweets or crisps but some do take them - cue much shock and disapproval on the face of dd1 (rule-abiding)

handlemecarefully · 05/12/2005 13:53

lol - lucky you to have such a sober and serious dd1, bless!

ENIDeepMidwinter · 05/12/2005 13:54

yes she is a total square

Jasnem · 05/12/2005 14:11

DDs school is also quite prescriptive, and if you send in things they are not allowed, they are returned in the lunch box with a note reminding younot to send it !

They also do alot of "healthy eating" work with the kids, but ime other kids can still find something not to like about your kids food if they try hard enough.

Caligyulea · 05/12/2005 14:31

Ooh, Jasnem, the Stalinist approach. I like it.

I had a major falling out with my aunty after she failed to listen to me about what I do and do not want DS1 to eat - she gave him chocolate before he was weaned and made him sick, she gave him processed, salty curry at 7 months and made him sick and the final straw was when she gave him cola to drink aged 1 and made him sick...I just don't get how infuriatingly ignorant some people are (we still dont talk - soo many issues!)

Hulababy · 05/12/2005 15:42

School DD is to go to next year only has one dinner time option - everyone has to stay for dinner and eat school dinner - and there are only two chioices - veggie and non-veggie. Fruit is the only snack allowed. I think it will make life easier in many ways though. I know Dd will eat things at nursery she doesn't eat so much at home - hoping it continues

Dinner ladies eh?
Wherever you go,they sure as hell aint no ladies.

(A strange and brutal subspecies methinks.)

fruitful · 05/12/2005 18:41

Aww, my friend was a dinner lady until recently, and she is lovely! Although she only has to look at anyone under 16 and they jump to obey her.

katymac · 05/12/2005 18:48

Say they are mouldy eyeballs and he should get some street cred for eating them

cathyspamtaslittlehelper · 05/12/2005 21:32

love the mouldy eyeballs idea! PMSL
