Quick straw poll: how often do you:

a) eat takeaways?
b) eat in a restaurant?

Reality, do you all order a dish each? As I said before, ours comes to nigh in £40 and I couldn't envisage us spending that every week, especially when my shopping bill is on average £140.

NettoSuperstar · 31/07/2011 20:22

Dd and me if she's home or just me if she's not.
I spend maybe £8-15 but that'll do two nights.

Takeaway about once a week
Restaurant practically never since having DS, maybe 4 times in past 2 years (excluding holidays)

JiminyCricket · 31/07/2011 20:25

A) about once a fortnight, usually indian takeaway and me and dh share one rice, one main and one veg side dish between us plus poppadoms, dc's too young to enjoy it yet

b) whenever we have a babysitter no more than once a month...also lunch out with the dc's or other family about once every two months maybe, we do cafes a lot but just for coffee and cake, lunch is too expensive for four of us and dc's seem to prefer homemade sarnies and a juice carton.

bucaneve · 31/07/2011 20:30

a) once a month maybe at my parents

b) once or twice a week, just realised that's actually quite a lot - Maybe a bit too much in the money saving stakes!

bellavita · 31/07/2011 20:31

After our hols, that will be my main goal - to get my shopping down to less than £100 (but with two growing boys of 14 and 12 it is difficult) so we can enjoy takeaway more often. We have 4 portions of pilau rice - I have 2/3rds of a tub and DH has the rest of mine plus his own tub. The boys eat a full portion of their own dish.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 31/07/2011 20:37

Takeaways maybe once a month, but often they are bought by my parents.

Have not eaten out in a long while, was just saying to DH earlier that it's been ages!

Takeaway about 3 times a month, eating out once a month as a family, and every few months just DH and I.

cantpooinpeace · 31/07/2011 20:44

a) 3-5 a month - usually Chinese.

b) Does Morrisons cafe count? We go for a Fri tea if nothing else on. At the moment we can feed a family of 4 for as little as 7 pounds and if you choose the right stuff it's more than edible. Best bit? No washing up after and the kids think it's a right treat! Restaurants maybe 10 times a year.

Portofino · 31/07/2011 20:49

Hmm, in the Uk we used to have takeaway once or twice a week, but it's probably once a month now as it seems much more expensive and just doesn't taste the same. I will buy deli stuff from the supermarket instead. Dd occasionally gets frites et mayonnaise on the way home from school. Also they have an artisans market on a Friday near the school and you can get roasted chickens, paella, thai food at really good prices, so we probably do that once a month as well.

Eating out as a family - probably once a month (or less) outside of holidays - but we have had various trips to the UK, a week away at Easter and 3 weeks in France this month where we ate out a lot. I tend to save spare cash for the holidays.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 31/07/2011 20:54

takeaway, once every month or two - usually fish and chips.
eating out, maybe once a month - pub lunch.

bellavita · 31/07/2011 21:27

Ruby, yes doing own rice is the way to go so we could have a take away more often, even if we just did this every other time.

moonferret · 31/07/2011 21:29

I used to get takeaways or eat out 4 or 5 times a week. Then I worked out how much I was throwing away a year and have had one takeaway in the last 5 years (with no restaurants). I've saved a fortune, and besides, I don't trust the hygiene in many of those places!

letthembe · 31/07/2011 21:34

Takeaway - rarely
meal out with friends - every other month or so
meal out as a family - every school holiday
Friday lunch out with colleagues - every week term time (just because we need to have a change)

bacon · 02/08/2011 15:23

Takeaways: hardly ever as it too expensive, not fussed on the meat and god only knows where from- yuk! Perhaps fish & chips every few months or so. Probably all of us.

Eat Out: As we are foodies we only eat at good restaurants so once again 1 - 2 months. Mainly just the two of us as its a nightmare taking children. The occassional Sunday lunch.

bacon · 02/08/2011 15:29

Am I the only one that thinks chinese is awful, its a plate of greasy mush??? Around here the chinese and Indians must source all their food from the same pot - its all bard. The Indian close to us has had exactly the same menu for 12 years. Sadly no quality takeaways around here.

I can make a curry 10 x better than the utter crap you get around here!

Laquitar · 02/08/2011 15:48

I agree bacon. Chinese and indian are awfull and pizza is too greasy too. And they cost almost the same as eating out. No way i will pay £30-£40 for take away.

We 've got some supermarket pizzas in the freezer plus samosas, spring rolls etc, i buy them when they are on special offers so they cost very little. Plus the supermarkets have more strict rules on hygiene than the take away places.

notcitrus · 02/08/2011 17:29

Depends on the takeaway - near me there must be 50 Chinese takeaways which deliver, all of which serve similar glop. There's one good Thai though, and a bunch of excellent Indian/Sri Lankan/Bangladeshi places serving good food not just 'curry house' glop, thanks to local customers who know their cuisines.
There's also one excellent pizza delivery place, not greasy at all (plus dozens of deep pan grease fests). And often takeaway is cheaper than ready meals.

I do have bad memories of various takeaways in more rural bids of Britain. The Isle of Cumbrae is wonderful in many ways but its 'Indian' and 'Chinese' takeaway are affronts to tastebuds!

a) eat takeaways? If proper chip shop chips count then once a month. We get wagamama take out a couple of times a year.

b) eat in a restaurant? Probably a couple of times a month, mum treats us every so often.
