i love cooking, but im a rubbish baker, and i have no patience for icing and making it look pretty. however its DS's birthday soon and i wanted to make some fairy cakes, my idea was some choc ones with chocolate topping and plain ones with buttercream topping, now when i do a cake i slap on that betty crocker stuff from a tub, will this work with my newly purchased piping bag and nozzle kit? I want my baking to look PRETTY god damn it!

Betty Crocker is vile in comparison to buttercream.

2oz butter
4oz icing sugar
1oz drinking chocolate
Whip it up together and add a little milk if you want it softer.

TBH icing sugar and water is perfect and less sickly for plain fairy cakes and then you can add toppings.

Also my boys LOVE nutella in the middle of butterfly cakes.

cut out the middle/top of fairy cake, splodge in some nutella, add a sparkly topping and top with icing sugar.

They will look professional!

i will have a go at the propper buttercream, i'm on a tight schedule as i am working the day before so will be doing everything on the day - but i can manage that recipe! thanks!

Nutella is a great idea, especially if you put it into a piping bag and swirl it onto the cakes. I like to use a vanilla buttercream and I generally use the same sort of recipe that collision suggests. I like mine soft so always add a few drops of milk Smile

i have a month to practice, i dont have an artistic bone in my body so it should be an experience!

I do fairy cakes but I cannot do buttercream to save my life. I don't like butter unless it's cooked in something so I tried marg. Maybe that's where I'm going wrong.

I use glace icing with lemon juice and vanilla and some colouring. Then dip cakes in 100s and 1000s.

I've tried the B Crocker chocolate fudge icing- very nice.

Or a ganache which was plain chocolate and double cream melted. But it's very rich and not sweet so probably not to childrens taste
