Cake Pops- Help!

Anyone out there who has made cake pops? I've had the book since Christmas and finally tried them tonight. The actual making of the cake into a ball was fine but I found covering them so hard. I use a Wilton candy melt but it was too thick, I did try to thin it with vegetable oil as explained in the Bakerella book but it was still too thick really and I couldn't get the pops to slide off the spoon. I've had a look over the web to try and find other candy coverings as I did find a blog that said Wilton's covering can be thick. It's hard to find a reasonable priced alternative though in the UK. Any advice or ideas. I'd really like to crack this as although they looked messy they tasted lovely.

Hmm...I thought they were just covered either in chocolate or in frosting and then rolled in stuff but after looking into it it seems that generally something called "bark" is used which according to wikipedia is "an artificial chocolate made with vegetable fats instead of cocoa butter and with coloring and flavors added" which sounds...interesting.

This recipe says if you dip in normal melted chocolate, you can add a single square of "edible wax" to the melted chocolate if you want it to be more resistant.

I use Wilton candy melts and it is thick but does work! I have added vegetable oil to thin it slightly but have found that if you practise and get the technique right it does work. What book do you have? I gave bakerella one.

I just use ordinary cooking chocolate. Not the cheapest type but a supermarket's posh range.

I make loads of cake pops - and did before they were called cake pops- my mum used to make them for us 40 years ago!

Thanks everyone, I'm going to keep trying. I just wanted them to be perfect first time Grin Seeker these things always come back round re-branded don't they? I actually was trying to make the cake bites from the Bakerella book as they looked easiest but in retrospect I think dipping the pops on sticks would be easier because it wouldn't involve submerging the whole cake at once and then trying to get it out.

A friend came over yesterday and said they tasted great and didn't look that messy at all. You are always your own harshest critic though aren't you? DS (2.8yrs) tried one though and said "urgh disgusting" think that was the mint chocolate though....

I make novelty cakes for what I laughingly call my living, so I've always got cake offcuts and butter cream over. I just crumble the cake, then mix in enough butter cream to make a firm gunge.Then aI roll it into balls and (important bit this) chill them til the next day. Then melt the chocolate, dip the end of the sticks into the chocolate and thenninto the balls. Do this with all of them first- the chocolate anchors the sticks a bit. Then quickly swirl them round in tchocolate and shove the sticks into a bit of styrofoam packaging you've saved from the last toy you bought. The swirling takes a bit of practice - it's easy to get too much chocolate on which makes them look messy, but once you've got the knack it's easy.

Seeker I am Envy I would love to have the skills to cake make as a profession. Do you have any pictures? I'm practising but am no where near a sellable standard yet.

I don't know. Whatever scrappy little idea of you I'd put together, it wasn't a novelty cake maker. How fun though.
