Urgent advice needed. Should I use this or chuck it?

I made some pastry last wednesday, used half and put the rest in the fridge. So it has been in the fridge for 5 days.

I have just rolled it out and it smells very faintly cheesy. Only very faintly.

Do you reckon it'll be alright to use?

I wouldn't use it, it will keep for 24 hours in the fridge, but not much longer. And if it smells cheesy it's no good. Sorry, but I'd sling it.

spidermama · 29/11/2005 15:10

Oh-wuh! Not the answer I was hoping for.
It does smell cheesy though. Grrrrrrrr!

chuck it chuck

Milge · 29/11/2005 15:10

no. bin it.

WigWamBam · 29/11/2005 15:11

I didn't think that was the answer you were looking for somehow

I really wouldn't risk it, not after 5 days. And it'll only take five minutes to make some more.

spidermama · 29/11/2005 15:14

Oh alright-tuh!
Thanks. You're right of course.

I had an eccentric Great Aunt (Auntie Batty) who would carry on using food for months after it was safe. I once saw her scrape thick green mould off a jug of gravy and reheat it. Uergh!

She was very fit and healthy though and lived into her nineties.

When she was 9, my sister once wrote in Batty's visitor's book,
'Auntie Batty and Uncle Dick
Your aspic chicken makes us sick'.

She sounds ... er ... wonderful!

If my dh's grandmother was unsure whether something was off or not (like your pastry) she'd put it back in the frige, and if it wasn't green three days later then it was perfectly fit to eat.

bundle · 29/11/2005 15:51

people make pastry..?

motherinferior · 29/11/2005 15:53

Come off it, Bundle, you make hamburgers.

bundle · 29/11/2005 15:54

only in the time i spend not making pastry...did you win the ice-cream-maker argument btw? made pesto last night but that doesn't count. oh and some lovely courgette & feta fritters, a la claudia roden

collision · 29/11/2005 15:59

DH, who is a chef, says that as long as you made it with butter and it isnt mouldy or slimy then it will be fine.

handlemecarefully · 29/11/2005 15:59

If it smells I wouldn't use it.

I do think generally we are OTT about this sort of thing however...I was recently reading something in a Sunday supplement where an expert nutrionist / scientist was pointing out that actally a lot of food (not meat or poultry) was perfectly edible after it's use by date

motherinferior · 29/11/2005 16:03

Bundle, the ice cream argument was as on Over-ridden Qualm as far as I was concerned.

collision · 29/11/2005 16:07

According to DH, it is just a reaction of the butter with the flour (esp with plain flour) and if there is egg in there too, it would create a slightly cheesy smell.

No mould or slime
Will be fine!!

spidermama · 29/11/2005 16:13

Oh no! I wish I'd read your post before I chucked it Collision. It was spelt flour as well and I have non left.

So, my Auntie Batty was right all along.

collision · 29/11/2005 17:39

Yep! Im very lucky! He used to work for The Roux Brothers and then Carluccio so we do eat yummy food!

daisy1999 · 29/11/2005 17:56

chuck it!!

sweetkitty · 29/11/2005 17:59

Technically from a safety point of view you can use it (won't go into all the microbiology you'll fall asleep).

Personally quality wise it might be a bit iffy I would probably chuck it but it won't make you ill.

GhostofNatt · 29/11/2005 18:03

Anyone know where I can find a husband who is a chef?

zebratwizzler · 29/11/2005 18:37

I would use it without qualms if it was just butter+flour+water.

Last year we moved our stuff into storage at a friend's house in February. End of July we come to move into our new house, retrieving fridge from storage.

There was an unopened lump of butter in it, at least 6 months old (obviously).

We ate it, it was fine, honest...!

Not all DHChefs cook at home though!! Mine does!
