Oh yeah! If you have been avoiding peanuts you may want to continue to do that to try to prevent allergies.

vivie · 12/10/2003 21:51

YES!!! but I would agree with bobthebaby and avoid peanuts to avoid allergies. They say some bf babies don't like their mums to eat certain foods, like caffeine, cabbage, citrus, chilli, garlic, but I would eat everything you want unless it turns out your baby has a problem with it. You could keep a food diary if your baby has periodic bad wind or something. Remember that chocolate is very good for milk production

ha ha ha... i dont believe you about the chocolate!!!! but I've heard jam donuts are essential!

I know it sounds odd, but I was told to stay off dairy products, especially milk, as it was producing a gassy colicky baby. I'm not sure this one was true or not - it could just have been DD in the evenings. I did stop drinking milk though. I was also told to stay away from spicy foods for the same reason.

Most little babies are fussy in the evening. Not eating dairy is only worth trying once you have tried everything else. Eliminating eggs can also be helpful, but again try everything else first as they are a good source of nutrients. Also you have to completely cut out a food to see if there is a result and you have to do it for weeks not days. Now my DS has had the allergy tests I can't eat any dairy or eggs and its a pain in the a*.

I ate everything and anything. There are no health issues unless your child is genuinely allergic or you have fairly severe allergies in your family in which case you may want to avoid dairy products (or whatever your/your child's allergy is). Otherwise, eat everything!

Hello
I have breastfed my baby since birth, she is almost 7 months and I am trying to wean her off my boobies! I eat almost the same diet as when I was pregnant which is everything except soft eggs cheeses etc!!! I love garlic and use it in my most of my cooking and chilli. It does not seem to effect my baby at all, I guess if you ate alot of that food whilst pregnant then its ok while breast feeding. I do avoid pure fruit juices or drink small amounts as I noticed it gave her a tummy ache if i drank a large glass of orange or apple juice. Maybe its just too acidic. I was told mby my hv that i could eat pate etc but I have avoided them to be on the safe side. I am also very wary of getting food posining as that would mean you cant feed you baby so it is worth your while to express 5 mins after a feed now and then and freeze some milk incase you do get an illness where you cant nurse. As I said I am trying to wean her off, I will need to diet as soona s i stop breast feeding. she really does suck the calories out, I am back to my pre preg weight and I eat so much... i love breastfeeding - pass the cake!

I only wish breastfeeding helped me lose my post-baby weight.

tinyfeet · 13/10/2003 19:16

MammyShirl, I'll try that again:

Ah, forget it! I'm trying to say that your message belongs on the Threads You Wish You Could Start thread. She says enviously.

codswallop · 13/10/2003 19:19

why should spicy foods affect the baby? they dont affect all..say, Indian babies do they?

If you alwasys eat spicy foods why should it be a problem?

aloha · 13/10/2003 19:20

mammyshirl, food poisoning doesn't mean you have to stop breastfeeding. Obviously it's not easy to actually feed while vomiting (!) but you are no more likely to get food poisoning while breastfeeding that at any other time. Pate, soft cheeses etc are all as safe for a breastfeeding mother as for any other non-pregnant woman.

tinyfeet · 13/10/2003 19:42

Codswollop, I was told - and it could've been a myth, that spicy foods might cause gas. My DD1 farted all the time!! So I tried everything I could to reduce the gas.

codswallop · 13/10/2003 19:46

nah!! scoff the curries!

lucy123 · 13/10/2003 19:50

No, no - eat as many different foods as you can!

The flavour of any foods gets into your milk (especially spicy foods), giving your baby early tastes of the foods you eat. I have read, and truly belive that as much food-variety as possible is really good for babies early on because it can reduce the chances of getting a fussy eater later on, plus you know that baby has at least tasted a few things if they do turn out to be fussy!
