I am thinking of changing my babys milk today and just need advice as to whether to or not. My dd is 4 months old and had very bad colic from birth. She has been on Farleys first milk for about a month and she has been ok on that. We are weaning her now but she is still waking up for about 2 milk feeds a night!! I am thinking of changing her milk to Farleys second milk for hungrier babies but am obviously worried it will upset her stomach. I would be really grateful if anyone could give me some advice. Is it normal for her to be still waking for feeds during the night and will the second milk make a difference do you think???

she may get a bit constipated, she may turn her nose up at it. u may find she is more settled on it. but then u may still find she is waking up twice a night. my dd2 was put on sma white at 3months, she was feeding every 2 hours. i put her on white just to see if she would go longer between feeds. it took about 3 weeks before she went longer, i dont think the milk made much difference, but it was worth a try. if u do change her milk, stick with it, it will upset her stomabhe more to chop and change her milk.

hi magnum
Does she regularly drink a full bottle (8 oz) and be hungry a couple of hours later? Does she drink way more than the normal volume for a baby her age and weight (2.5 oz per pound of body weight per day)? If yes, then she's probably hungry and hungry baby formula may help. If no, then the night time wakings may be due to something else. Has the night waking got worse since you started weaning? If so, be careful you don't introduce solids too fast so she cuts down her milk - there's hardly any calories in a baby rice compared to milk, but it fills babies' tummies so they can't drink enough milk to last all night.

vivie, do you know what, I think you might be right!! She loves solid food and tends to eat everything presented to her but sometimes does not finish her bottle. I always thought that the solid food would fill her up more. I know the milk is really important and do try to get as much down her as possible but after a solid feed sometimes she can't manage a whole bottle. I will definately maximise the milk and cut down on the solids. Thanks for the advice it really makes sense and I will hold off changing her milk for now!!

Or you could try giving her them the other way round, give her the milk first then offer her the solids the you know she has had all her milk and she still gets a wee bitty of solids to get her used to them.

magnum - remember that first solids can also cause night-wakings (due to rumblings etc in tummy).

She could just be hungry, but I would be inclined to take one thing at a time: either change her milk, but cut back on the solids or stick to rice; or stick with the milk she has now and gradually give her more solids. If she was breast fed before you put her on the Farley's milk, you may well find that the richer formulas make her worse, not better (dd didn't take to them until 4 months after we'd stopped b/fing)

Also I take it you follow all the advice about no eye-contact etc with night feeds. Does she feed well at breakfast time?

oh yes, see you have said you will hold off changing her milk (I'm tired).

that's the right decision!
