Restricted eating

My son billy has just turned 3, he is a lovely bright lively boy who is has just learnt that there are boundaries to push! Billy has a very restricted diet, and although he eats well, he only eats a small number of foods. He's been like this for around a year and I just put it down to faddy eating, but recently he's gone up a gear, starting to cut out more foods and examining the foods I give him, he won't eat it if its not cut right or touching a different kind of food. I have spoken to the health visitor who threw me a bit, I was expecting her to just call him faddy, but she was really quite concerned and has referred him to a dietician. I got a copy of the letter today and seeing it in print has made me feel quite sad. I've tried just giving him what I want him to eat but he simply refuses everthing, i get him to help in the kitchen, but he's not keen to even touch the food I've tried bribery stopping treats and getting cross, but nothing has worked. I could really do with some tips from like minded people, I just want the best for my son, but his diet is now affecting us as a family, its a nightmare taking him out to eat and is taking the edge of our days. Any advice would be gratefully received !!

my advice is to keep offering foods... or try offering him a choice

for example for dinner he has a choice of:

fish fingers, potatoes and peas

OR

chicken, sweetcorn and rice.

he HAS to choose one. if he doesn't you choose for him. you then serve up whichever one he has chosen.

if he eats some of everything on the plate (can just be a nibble) he gets a star on his star chart.
once he has a certain ammount of stars he gets a prize

you can make sure each meal includes one thing you know he will eat... but don't let him push you into cutting it a certain way etc etc

No cihld will starve themsevels. if he is hungry he will eat. If he doesn't eat his dinner he gets nothing else. he goes to bed hungry. he will soon get tired of it, though it will be hard for you to start with!

he is very used to being the boss and getting what he wants... you need to turn that around and show him that YOU are in charge

oh and also the key is CONSISTENCY! you have to do the same thing EVERY day, for EVERY meal so that he realises you aren't going to back down and do it his way
