How do I know if my loaf tin is a 1 pound loaf tin?

Making a MN banana loaf receipe which calls for a 1lb loaf tin. Mine is a loaf tin that I make cakes in but I have no idea whether it is a 1lb tin. The mixture comes practically up to the top (about 2cm below) does this seem about right?

Seems a bit full compared to mine, but I don't know if mine is a 1 pound loaf tin Blush - looks like it is the standard size so I think it is!

A 1lb Loaf Pan will have a volume of around 1 litre (or 4 Cups). Contrary to popular myth, although a US Cup and a European Cup are different sizes, the difference is only about 1.5%. You can assume that a Cup is around 240ml, hence the 4 cups to the litre I mentioned above.

1 Cup equals:

Plain Flour 100gm
SR Flour 111gm
Caster Sugar 190gm
Granulated Sugar 195gm
Brown Sugar 200gm
Ground Almonds 85gm
Butter 230gm
Lard 224gm

Actually, fill it with water, then pour the water into a measuring jug. A 1lb loaf tin will have a capacity of about 450ml, give or take (usually a little more, to allow for rising).

Actually, LaLoose, I have just been in to the Showroom and measured; I litre for a 1lb, possibly down to 900ml (as our pans are on the large size). 450ml is only a 1/2lb pan. Don't forget that flour and yeast weigh less than water, and CO2 considerably less than that.

I know this is an old thread but - I have a tin which holds 1 litre of liquid. It takes a 900g (or 2lb) cake mix.

450ml is a 1lb pan.

I know this from bitter experience garnered from following the above advice! The 900g recipe [http://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/6855/marble-chocolate-loaf here], which I thought would fill my "1lb cos it holds 1 litre" loaf pan twice, fills my tin to about 1.5cm below top.

If we are being totally fussy 1 lb = 454g and 1 ml of water weighs 1g

Chucking water in your usual cake tin and comparing this the amount needed to fill strange shaped tins is a very handy trick.

My only problem is my nice 4 egg 8 inch tin is loose bottomed.

Don't confuse the weight of cake mix to the weight of dough, and more particularly how they bake. A 900gm loaf of bread will start off with about 1200gms of dough (because the water tends to evaporate during proving and cooking). A loaf of bread will often rise a couple of inches above the top of the pan, whereas cake mix would flood all over the oven if that were to happen.
