As long as it has low, high, and auto settings, the make isn't that important. I've got huge Prima slow cooker and keep meaning to invest in a smaller model - your Breville from Argos looks like a very good buy Auntie.

There are so many slow cooker recipes on the net it's not worth buying a cookbook, and most recipes can easily be adapted for slow cooking; meat loaf, pot roast, boiled (salt) beef and carrots with fluffy dumplings, ratatouille, veggy casseroles, pie fillings, tagines, curries, etc. I like to cook porridge overnight in winter - there's something magical about tucking into a hot breakfast with no effort.

I've got a Prima breadmaker (one owner, barely used, any takers?) but I'm reliably informed that the best make is Panasonic.

I'm a kitchen gadget whore; anyone got a Remoska? I've been trying to convince myself for the past few years that I can live without one, but I'm in serious danger of succombing to the hype.

How do you cook porridge in the slow cooker?

Fifis25StottieCakes · 27/06/2011 21:30

what kind of stock/herbs or spices are you putting in there, are you putting too much water in the slow cooker.

Dementedma - if yours doesn't have a timer, just get one of those plug in ones. I switch mine on around 8am and set it to off at around 2/3pm and then just reheat as needed.

Pot roast is a big hit here - I love the slow cooker becasue you can do really cheap cuts of meat and they taste lush. I use tinned mushroom/chicken soup in the bottom of the pot for roasting chicken etc.

What's a remoska?!
Any other must have kitchen gadgets?!

I'm stocking up! Grin

put it on at 3pm today (or rather DD did) and by 6pm chicken pieces were falling apart tender - I cut them with a spoon - but meat was dry and tasteless, despite loads of juice from tomatoes and wine.
had I put it on at 8am it would have been inedible by evening. What am i doing wrong?

i would buy a new slow cooker, my meat would never be done in 3 hours. Ive got the £15 one from Tesco and i have never had a problem with it.
