Pitta Pockets - with Jam***!!!

I have to post this or I will explode!!
DD is 2.11 and eats fairly well but has a v sweet tooth so I am always trying to interest her in new savory things that she can enjoy.
On Sunday, I had a minor brainwave and tried her with toasted pitta bread pockets filled with cooked turkey, lettuce and raw peas (she loves raw peas). This really caught her imagination and she loved them, asking for a second one and then a third eating all the veggies up too. Hurrah, a great result!!
I had to go to work unusually early yesterday so MIL came over to give DD her breakfast. DD is still excited about the pockets and asks for one for her breakfast. So what does MIL put in the pitta pocket, you guessed it - lashings of strawberry JAM!!!
FFS - what is wrong with MIL!! Or am I being totally unreasonable about this??
Would appreciate views before I blast MIL about this latest food faux pas. Previous instalments have included her feeding Haagen Daz to DD when she was just weaned etc.... BTW MIL is retired now but was MW/HV for over 30 years!!

did you think she'd give her peas for breakfast?

No - not peas but now DD won't eat savory fillings in the pitta bread and thinks they should always come with spoonfuls of sweet yummy jam....

Foiled again!!

what did you want her to put in it then? How about mashed banana in one for breakfast?

Tyakit · 22/11/2005 11:37

Yes, she knows very well that DD would rather skip the savory and live on biscuits. MIL lives with us in a granny flat and helps out with childcare when I am working.

I think I feel so annoyed because it's just the latest example of me feeling undermined in my own home.

I'm sorry but I think you are being a bit harsh - from your post it sounds like you didn't leave any instructions for your MIL.

I don't think this a case of your MIL undermining you in your own home - it sounds like a genuine mistake and an over reaction on your part.

Sorry to be so blunt.

starlover · 22/11/2005 12:32

ui agree with moggymummy!

i mean, for breakfast i would imagine that a LOT of people would have toast with jam/marmalade... whatever.

so your mum just applied that to pitta pocket!

My ds loves pitta with jam - just like toast with jam IMO. Can't you just say to dd that you have jam for breakfast sometimes but not for lunch and supper?

Tyakit · 22/11/2005 19:19

OK - have chilled out and made peace with the MIL. It was just a nice thimg to have discovered a different savory meal that DD found fun and enjoyable.
BTW - I don't leave 'instructions' for MIL - she lives with us and knows as well as I do what DD has for breakfast etc. And no, I can't just explain to DD that jam is optional. I have tried this with toast i.e. you can have lots of lovely other things with toast but she is a jam fiend!!

Thanks for the views though!

Hmm, it's a tough one. I wouldn't see anythign wrong with pitta bread and jam but if she lives with you and knows what you like dd to eat then...? Even though she lives with you, you maybe just need to be absolutely clear about what you do/don't want dd to eat.

Anyway, I know it's a bit American but you could try pitta with peanut butter and jam. Just use a tiny little bit of jam that way dd still thinks she's getting it but it's more savoury than sweet.

pinotgrigio · 24/11/2005 10:01

I completely sympathise. DP did this the other day. We were at the airport. I was playing with DD in the soft play area. To get a snack for DD he walked past the salad & fruit bar to get a bag of chips from mcdonalds. Covered in salt FGS!! I went spare.

We've never ever gone into McDonalds. Why on earth would he buy her a bag of chips when I'm carrying a coolbag of pre-approved healthy snacks, walking past a pile of fruit salad (which she loves) too.

. He won't ever do that again. I didn't stop shouting for about 20 minutes.

breville toasties with jam were my fave snack food when little

Sugarmag · 24/11/2005 10:52

ooh, you could also fill the pitta bread with cucumber and cream cheese or cucumber and hoummus or grated cheese and veg. sorry, getting a bit away from the point of the thread but kids and love pitta bread and are always looking for interesting things to put in it.
