Good pasta sauce for children?

blue2711 · 25/05/2011 21:31

A ready made one, please. My DS is 22 months and loves pasta so it's a nice quick meal. I can then stir in veg / cheese / tuna etc as I wish.

He's had baby suitable ones until now or I've made them (inexpertly - am no cook) but I'd like to have a few jars in the cupboard that are larger and better value.

Any recommendations? Thanks.

Almost ready made.

Open tin of chopped tomatoes. Add two whole cloves of garlic and a few glugs of olive oil. Simmer and reduce for 20 minutes. Fish out garlic cloves. Puree/whizz. Keeps in fridge for a week, freezer for longer.

Oh, taffeta, that sounds like something that even I could make! And have all those things so will try tomorrow. Thank you.

I do similar to Taffeta but chuck in a load of veg - carrots, courgette, pepper, mushroom, onion...really anything I've got hanging around. Simmer until it's all soft and then blend. Not only do the veg add to the flavour but it's also a good way to get some veg down kids without them really noticing it...Wink
It's also really nice with some herbs (dried, or fresh basil) and a splash of balsalmic vinegar gives it some sweetness.
I freeze it in portions and use it on pasta or pizza. Or you can even thin it down and call it Tomato and Vegetable Soup! Grin

Pesto is a favourite here and I'll usually put some peas/ veg in and sometimes cut up sausages.

Better still use pasata or tin toms & blitz up with carrot, brocolli, spinach, red pepper, bit of olive oil etc etc -

same pasta sauce as above, but with hidden veggies :) - the trick is to keep the balance of red to green & add a bit of tom puree if it starts to look a bit "sludgy"

Squirt of tomato puree. Couldn't get simpler and after much experimentation it's still the only one ds is guaranteed not to complain about.

keep portions of leftover bolognese/cheese sauces in the freezer and just cook the pasta as you need it. DD also likes broccoli/cauliflower mixed in with the cheese sauce (I just cook the veg in with the pasta to save using extra pots).

use white sauce either homemade or bought add juice of a lemon.
cook frozen peas in it then add tuna.
quick and cheapSmile

Egg with a tiny tiny pinch of salt and a little milk, well stirred, tipped over pasta and heated for a minute. Add a little grated cheese.

This goes down a treat with my DD's.......wilt a 200g bag of spinach (i just put it in a sieve and pour boiling water over it). Drain well and saute for a minute or so with a knob of butter. Put it into a blender with a dollop of philly, a splash of milk and a grating of nutmeg. Blend and serve. I sometimes put parmesan or roasted garlic in as well, but prefer it without. Easy to make and freezes beautifully.

I whizz up 2 tins of toms, a tub of creme fraiche and chuck in whatever is leftover veg from the fridge with some chopped garlic and then simmer for 20 mins. Makes shit loads and I just pour into freezer bags.

gastrognome · 27/05/2011 09:56

Pesto, home made or bought. Whizz up or mash in some brocolli and it's virtually undetectable! If making your own pesto you can add some spinach leaves too.
