Silverside Beef

Sainsbury's have Silverside beef on at half price at the moment. Huge lump of beef for £4. I seem to remember this is pretty tough roasted but would it be worth buying and cooking as stewing steak in cassaroles etc.?

I think you can pot roast it, would be nice at this time of year with lots of root veggies in.

Hi Frayedknot - love your name did wonder what your answer was going to be tho.

Tbat's a good idea, I heard somewhere that if you cook meat long enough it will always be tender but there is nothing worse than chewy meat it puts met in mind of school dinners. Have you ever cooked silverside just not sure its not realy shoe leather but we are on a strict economy drive at the moment and at that price it would really "fit the bill"?

I always buy silverside. I cook it really really slowly in the oven, usually covered with a little water in it.

Yummy

this says you can roast or pot roast it

so I would pot roast to be on the safe side.

Thanks Julienetmum. What temp and for how long and do you serve it as a casserole or like a roast?

Bung it in oven on low (cover with foil). When I say low I mean less than 1 for gas oven (100c) for electrics. Leave for 6 hours. Wicked.

If it's a really small joint (size of half a baked bean can) only 4 hours. If its the size of a big dog meat can, leave it over night.

Also put about an half inch of water in with it, you get fantastic gravy.

Hello!

UCM · 12/11/2005 22:44

Oh and no one ever died from eating undercooked beef!

Am thinking of completely giving up chicken because of bird flu. What does everyone else think

dizzydo · 12/11/2005 22:56

Thanks UCM am not at all bothered about it being undercooked, i.e. rare, just cant stand thought of tough and gristly.

UCM.. I'm pretty sure there was a recent news thang confirming a study that bird flu could not be transmitted through eating the flesh as it is viral.

Although that said, am looking forward to the panic non-buying a la the beef scare a few years back where it was possible to buy a whole cow for £1. Yum.
