My dh says that I should not use it for roasting as you cannot use it for stir frys since it smokes at high temps. However, I am sure telly cooks use it for roasting. Do you? Should you??? All answers gratefully received.

JonesTheSteam · 11/11/2005 16:27

I've used it and it's always been fine!

crunchie · 11/11/2005 16:29

Blimey I use it for everything inc stir frying

LadySherlockofLGJ · 11/11/2005 16:29

I think it is fine for roasting, but not ideal for deepfrying as it does not get hot enough.

Or maybe I dreamt it.

polly28 · 11/11/2005 16:29

always use it,dh usesgroundnut for roast potatoes though cos they reach a higher temp or something, olive oil is great for roasting veg though

cupcakes · 11/11/2005 16:31

I do use it but we also have a very smoky oven so maybe I should stop!!

scotlou · 11/11/2005 16:47

I always use it for roasting as it gives such a nice flavour. Never noticed it smoking more!

Nightynight · 11/11/2005 17:02

my italian friend uses it on baked fish.

deep frying and stirfrying - no, no, no! use sunflower or peanut oil.

MummyJules · 11/11/2005 17:13

I think the reason you can't use it for stir-frying is because to stir fry you need the oil to get very hot and olive oil doesn't get as hot as sunflower/vegetable oil, however olive oil for roasting is fine and it is a much better alternative to butter and goose fat!

sunchowder · 11/11/2005 17:41

I would use it for roasting. It does have a lower smoking point which is why I assume it is not usually used for saute ( but many cooks still do as it is healthy). I use canola oil to saute and olive oil for my salads and things. I am sure it will be fine for roasting.

katierocket · 11/11/2005 17:46

poor oliveoil - she'll be shocked you want to roast her

moondog · 11/11/2005 17:47

Ok as long as not virgin.
Groundnut (ie peanut) and sunflower best for stirfying.

KR

roosmoo · 11/11/2005 18:04

try rapeseed for roasting?
it's also v. good for you (omega 3, lots more than in olive oil).

aloha · 11/11/2005 18:05

It's fab for roasting, esp vegetables. Jaime Oliver uses it all the time.

Think all the benefits of olive oil are gone once heated. Nigella says why waste it for roastng. I still do though.
