Two birthday cakes - dog and cat ... help!

Need some help here please. I need to produce birthday cakes for soon to be 3 DTs. One wants a cat like www.partypieces.co.uk/kids-party-children-s-parties-party-supplies/birthday-cake-s-accessories-supplies/cake-making-kits/make-a-kitten-cake-kit.html - that ought to be pretty straightforward but any ideas What I should use for ears? I had thought a single layer sponge would be best?

DT1 really wants a pink cake Hmm. I thought she had forgotten that idea and have ordered light and dark brown regal ice to make a dog face in a similar shape to the cat. Now I'm stumped. Firstly, I can't find a dog template to copy (ideas for ears, nose etc etc) and secondly, should I forget the dog and make her something pink? I think it would have to be a plain sponge with pink buttercream ... covered in sweets or a pig.

So ..... HELP! Pretty please! Thanks. Grin

Make the second cake into a Peppa Pig, if she likes that?

hello kitty looks easy enough - bake a spare cake to cut bits for ears, or ues rice krispie squares instead.

How similar do they have to be? Could DT1 have a princess, maybe, or is that too different? Otherwise plain sponge with pink icing of some sort and a big '3' on it (maybe cut a stencil and sprinkle 100s and 1000s into the '3'?)

Oh, I like both those ideas. Am kicking myself cos initially I'd planned a (Peppa) Pig cake but then changed my mind. I can't get the regal ice icing locally and have had to order it online so am now stuck with brown. I could do a pig with pink buttercream but also really like Stealth's suggestion too. Off to the drawing board again. Will do an extra cake to use for the ears etc though. Thanks

Do you have more white regalice than you need for hello kitty? Pink is quite easy to achieve - it's red that is close to impossible!

Not enough but I wonder whether I can get a ready rolled White locally, that would do Kitty then I can use lots of elbow grease to get the pink colouring through the 1kg block of white! Great idea - thanks Stealth!

Do you have a local (or delivering) Sainsbury's? They do Silver Spoon 'ready to roll' icing, which is my favourite to work with - much nicer than the Oetker rubbish Tesco sell.

oh and if you have a mixer with a dough hook, there is an lazy easy way to colour icing...

Missed this til now Stealth. Two cakes made and iced. Did Kitty and a pig and am really pleased with both ... Kitty's ears aren't exactly right but the pig looks great .... and, for once, I'm not standing at 2am night before/morning off party finishing them off!! Thanks for your help.

Cakes done before 2am on morning of party is definitely cause for self-congratulation. I am sure the DTs will love them.
