What truly dubious combinations have you served up to your kids and got away with?

So today DS (4), DD (2) and I had been out all day at a farm park. We got in at 4.20pm; tea is 5pm. ASDA on-line shop arrives tomorrow night so it is last Sunday's shop remnants in the fridge. Some (still clinging onto life - just) veg in fridge and unopened pack of prawns (still in date).

Cue stir fry.

Problem is ... sauce.

Solution was: soya sauce, sweet chilli sauce (all ok so far, then remembered DS is a wimp and can't do heat, at all, in any way). So then i poured a good slug or 5 of pineapple juice in. Mmmm... looks too runny. Erm... yes tomato ketchup.

Yes -they polished it off.

I also have a tendency to rely over-heavily on frozen mixed veg when feeding the kids. Which I would never eat myself in a million gazillion years!!

Can't decide if it sounds revolting or yummy Grin

I'm boring when it comes to feeding my kids- when there's nothing in the fridge, they get boiled eggs and toast.

DD had to have leftovers the other night - she had baked beans, cous cous and....chicken in a tomato/olive sauce Shock - she loved it!

My mum made a stir fry sauce the other day, and substituted runny honey with golden syrup -YUK!!!

ah winnybella - you see the problem was also that there was no bread.

and the milk is also all out of date, so there is also only emergency, long-life milk. my dinner was cereal and long life milk. but i couldn't inflict that on them!

FessaEst -that sounds ok as long as the baked beans were cold Grin
but grim to the golden syrup jojay!

Our worst were both during weaning :

DH mixed up the cubes of frozen mush destined for DD1 (this was long before baby led weaning was considered anything other than a wilful attempt at babycide) and accidentally fed her pear and mash.

That went down better than my attempt, wherein I moistened her pasta with orange juice due to a general food supply failure while unexpectedly detained with family.

Other than that, we regularly have fridge-clearing sunday night suppers, but I feel as long as I stick out olives, pitta, baguettes and salad, even the most disparate elements can become a buffet.

So, the lesson is, don't think dubious, think dodgy wedding caterer.
