If you look at the labels most bottled waters have large amounts of salt in them i would take filtered water when you go out or just buy a pure fruit juice?

rockinhippy · 10/05/2011 16:27

Don't touch the flavoured waters at all, most if not all contain artificial sweeteners which are bad for everyone, especially children.

As already said its far better for you to take your own with you, but I understand that sometimes thats not an option, you run out etc etc - in which case its far better your DS gets any water, whether it has more salt in it than tap or not -

bottled water is more of an issue if you were making up formula with it as they would be taking in a lot more of it. I would use a plain water and choose the one with the lowest sodium content.

sayanything · 10/05/2011 20:07

I live in Belgium and here everyone uses Spa (the local bottled water) or Evian to make up bottles, including hospitals.

diggingintheribs · 10/05/2011 20:09

All my French friends used Evian to make up formula and I give that to my kids. I believe it is low sodium

storminabuttercup · 10/05/2011 20:12

thanks all

i was talking about this with a friend with a baby of the same age who said she 'just gets a fruit shoot' - she is clearly not a mumsnetter and is also a bit of an idiot

Lucky evian I would not mix a bottle of milk with it, have you read the label digging?

diggingintheribs · 11/05/2011 10:11

it's what's advised in france, and xref sayanything re using bottled water. it is much more the norm there. I'm sure there are other waters you can use but that's the only one i know is on the ok list.

personally i didn't need to make up bottles with it but after getting a stomach bug from tap water twice so far in my life (how unlucky am I!) I don't like giving it to the kids even boiled

ppeatfruit · 11/05/2011 11:42

I live in fr. 50% of the time they give some strange advice here;like it's not nec. to BF after 3months! Our tap water is like london's (we live in rural mid fr.) so we filter it. Just found a low sodium mineral water.

ppeatfruit · 11/05/2011 11:46

I've never got a bug from tap water Shock Did you complain to the water company?

rockinhippy · 11/05/2011 12:30

ppear I think if I was living in France or anywhere other than the UK with our safe tap water, (which I suspect is where diggin is Evian would be a FAR better bet than trusting the tap water :)

ppeatfruit · 11/05/2011 13:02

rockinhippy i don't trust english tap water either; a glass of chlorine anyone? Grin

rockinhippy · 11/05/2011 13:06

true Grin - but at least it won't infect you with anything I suppose - filter users here too :)

WowOoo · 11/05/2011 13:09

I gave bottled water at that age when i was out and about and had forgotten to bring water. It's fine now and again.
We use filtered water also.

diggingintheribs · 11/05/2011 13:24

Thames water both times. We only found out it was the water because they sent apology letters! Very localised problem but enough to put me off

rockinhippy · 11/05/2011 13:28

really diggin OMG & heres me thinking we were safe here with our tap water -

you got me wondering nowConfused what actual bug did you pick up?? - I ask as I used to live there & have only recently been diagnosed with this sort of thing after years of problems - doubt its the same, but curious none the less

nannyl · 11/05/2011 15:53

evian water is fine for babies

if out and about with a beaker id just ask some cafe to fill up cup... (have never had anyone refuse yet)

nannyl · 11/05/2011 15:53

i mean fill cup with tap water :)

diggingintheribs · 11/05/2011 18:00

It was in the nineties and I can't remember the name. It was a vomiting bug. Only affected those who were in the water area all day. Those who worked outside were fine. Very odd but very unpleasant!!

I know it's irrational as I'm sure cases are extremely rare but I can't bear to drink tap water now

I believe there is an area in Wales that is always being given bottled water because they keep getting a bug in the system.

hophophippidtyhop · 15/05/2011 13:15

I second what nannyl says, I've often asked a cafe or coffee place to fill the cup and not been turned down.
