International picnic - ideas please

Our church is holding an International Picnic where everyone brings a few dishes from their own country to share (there are lots of nationalities represented in the church). I'm already making a few 'English' things, namely:

sausage rolls (Delia, yum)
scones with berries and whipped cream
a lemon meringue pie
(mumsnet Grin) flapjacks

I'm looking for one more savoury thing to share. Any ideas? I would like to take quite a few things as my locust like kids will be there as well as a few people who don't have cooking facilities/money to spare.

Thanks Smile

Oh and although there is a microwave and an oven, there will be little time to warm stuff up so anything which can be served either cold or at room temperature would be best.

Not seasonal, but mince pies? Or individual Bread & Butter puddings (with marmalade).

A pie or quiche. Pork pie and chutney?

AuntieMonica · 09/05/2011 14:28

cucumber sandwiches

potted meat sandwiches

mini Yorkshire puds with roast beef and horseradish in middle

cubes of cheese/pineapple/pickled onions on sticks Wink

Thanks everyone! I am noting these down! A couple of little issues - I'm not in UK so would have to make things like pork pie (not un-doable but a faff) and I need to keep costs down, hence me making cheap sweet stuff like scones!

Coronation chicken sandwiches? They have a story to them - HERE.

2nd the cheese and pineapple on sticks!

Chil1234 · 09/05/2011 14:43

Cucumber sandwiches with the crusts cut off. Have never been offered one in 46 years of being a bona fide British citizen but it seems to be what others think we eat. Smoked fish being very British, I'd also recommend something with smoked salmon in it. Bit pricier than cucumber, however.

HazeltheMcWitch · 09/05/2011 14:44

Oh, and are you in the states? If so, you may find that they try to claim the lemon meringiue pie as their own, the bounders!

Victoria sponge?

cornish pasty?

NorbertDentressangle · 09/05/2011 14:45

Surely it has to be cucumber sandwiches!

Otherwise...pork pies? Scotch Eggs?

oxocube · 09/05/2011 14:54

No Hazel, in Holland Smile

May have to make some Scotch eggs and work on the British rather than English angle!! Actually not sure if the 'scotched' bit actually refers to Scotland - am sure I read differently recently.

Heres a history of Scotch eggs.

Apparently Fortnum and Mason claim to have invented them.

There are a few other regional variations on there too.

DO NOT MAKE CORONATION CHICKEN!!!!!!!!!

I made it for the Royal Wedding recently, and whilst it was delicious, it took blardy hours to make. You can make it with precooked chicken, but its a bit rubbery.

I will be buying a very good ready made one if I ever serve it again, like from Cook or somewhere. I cook nearly everything from scratch, but IMO CC isn't worth it.

How about some rare Roast Beef sandwiches? With mustard, natch. I believe the Dutch are partial to mustard. Smile

Taffeta · 09/05/2011 17:45

...or on that theme some mini yorkshire puddings with rare roast beef and mustard. They are still yum cold.

Some great ideas here, thanks everyone Smile

I am testing out (ie will scoff as soon as possible) Delia's sausage rolls with flaky pastry. Actually, have no need to test, its just an excuse to scoff Grin

The mini yorkies sound good as do the scotch eggs, although I seem to remember its so hard to get the sausage meat to stick to the egg! And definitely cheese and pineapple on sticks Wink
