Because I don't eat pork and am thinking of getting someone in to do a lamb roast for DH's birthday party. We always have a BBQ but he ends up doing the cooking and I end up schlepping in and out from the kitchen so thought I could just do loads of diffent kinds of salads and cous cous to go with it???

Or any other ideas would be appreciated - there will be about 40 - 50 people.

Did this for my husband's 40th and it was fantastic. They put chickens in the spit under the lamb as well so people had a choice of lamb or chicken. Went down really, really well!

dickcheeseandthecrackers · 25/04/2011 13:28

I'd think my luck was in. I love lamb!

My MIL often hires a caterer bbq thing where they do all the cooking and it works v well.

5inthebed · 25/04/2011 13:28

I would have to leave as I can't stand the smell of lamb, let alone at it. Sorry.

Maybe do a pork roast or a few chickens for those who don't eat lamb?

supadupacreameggscupa · 25/04/2011 13:28

if done in the oven fine, but i couldn't eat it from a spit like a hog roast.

Prunnhilda · 25/04/2011 13:28

I've had this. FIL dug a pit and roasted half a lamb, iirc. It was lovely.
Loads of salads. Maybe buy in some Lebanese pastries (halloumi triangles etc) if you have a local deli that would do them?

belgo · 25/04/2011 13:29

I'd say 'where's the mint sauce?'

Cattleprod · 25/04/2011 13:29

I'd think 'ooh, delicious, lamb is so much nicer than pork'.

Salads are a good idea, also a selection of sauces, and various types of bread.

LIZS · 25/04/2011 13:30

sounds yummy !

MadameCastafiore · 25/04/2011 13:33

Sinthebed - I feel that way about pork - the smell of it cooking and it's insipid white flesh (wormy flesh) makes me really really naucious - DH loves pork but hasn;t eaten it for the 9 years we have been together because he knows I can;t have it in the house!

WIll of course have mint sauce and the lebanese thing is a good idea, maybe lots of yogurty sort of dips and salads with fruit in?? And the bread.

Any other good dieas would be greatly appreciated.

And what about puds - I make loads of puddings but maybe thought loads of fruit and a chocolate fountain???? Tacky I know but would save on the washing up. Mind you could dip loads of strawberries and stuff couldn;t I to save a bit of money and mayeb have backlava and lots of little pastries???

Well in for a penny, in for a pound: if you're getting a Lebanese deli to provide pastries, get half a metric tonne of baklava as well Grin
Harissa sauce
Yogurt and mint sauce
Sesame sauce

Totally worth it

Another good dessert for a crowd is Eton Mess, but it has to be assembled at the last minutes in case the meringue goes soggy.

I am so hungry.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 25/04/2011 13:37

I'd think bloody lovely!

colditz · 25/04/2011 13:37

I would think "Oh WOW yum yum yum, spit roast lamb"
Then I would think "Oh bugger, no crackling"

Provide lots of salad and pitta bread.

MadameCastafiore · 25/04/2011 13:40

Oooohhhhhh Hoorah Hoorah - am so happy that it sounds like a great idea - we live in a little village so will have to have a hunt around to see where I can get all the other stuff - maybe on line or in the local town - not sure if there is a lebanese restaurant but am getting quite excited.

Keep the ideas coming guys.

Will deffo do eaton mess too - normally end up making pavlova for everyone's parties but really want this to be a celebration for me as well not one where I am waiting on people so thought maybe pay a few teens to do drinks etc???

Is going to be a no child affair too which will be a change for us as normally there are more kids than gorwn ups - will probably end up with lots of us ebing drunk but hey - your only 40 once eh??? (Well DH not me, I'm not there for another few years)

Oh god that sounds delicious!

ednurse · 25/04/2011 13:41

I've been to a party which had lamb and pork. Lamb was the clear winner.

Al0uiseG · 25/04/2011 13:42

Fantastic, I'm another one that doesn't actually like to see the carcuss taking pride of place though, I like to eat meat but I don't want to think too much about what it once was.

bellavita · 25/04/2011 13:53

Sounds fantastic.

You could always marinade and butterfly a couple of chickens and cook these in your own oven for those that do not like lamb - in fact you could cook these the day before and just carve them up before serving. I am lucky, I like all meat.

Lots of dippy yoghurty things sound ideal too, maybe do some warm pitta (but cut up into chunky strips?)

Chocolate fountain thing sounds ideal also. You could cut the fruit up beforehand and refigerate it.

RightUpMyRue · 25/04/2011 14:00

I'd think YUM, lucky us.

fivegomadindorset · 25/04/2011 14:02

Yum

Clary · 25/04/2011 14:04

I'd think oooh yummy Grin

Agree Eton Mess a good idea, also chocolate dipped fruit is always a success here (just a bowl of melted plain choc and loads of orange segemtns, strawbs, etc).

Cupcakes on a stand? Or is that a bit of a cliche?

StealthyKissBeartrayal · 25/04/2011 14:05

I'd be happy as long as there was plenty of other stuff, as a vegi

MadameCastafiore · 25/04/2011 14:07

Oh gawd forgat about the veggies - there is only one and he does eat fish I think so could just make sure had some nice Halibut or somehting like that and do it in the oven rather than with meat of course!

fazzie · 25/04/2011 14:47

i'd say yum - is it halal? ;-)
