What percentage of your income after tax and benefits do you spend on food?

Following on from moondog's comment on another thread that we only spend a tiny percentage of our income on food...

I spend at least 20% which I don't view as a tiny percentage! for me it is more than I spend on housing costs - ie mortgage, repairs, insurance, council tax

I#m interested in this.

ChasingSquirrels · 21/04/2011 16:46

I'd say around 10%.

pinkhebe · 21/04/2011 16:48

about 25%

moondog · 21/04/2011 16:50

Are you a bit of a foody Pink?

ChasingSquirrels · 21/04/2011 16:51

surely your income is totally relevant in this though?
10% of £10k pm is a lot more than 10% of £2k pm.

lljkk · 21/04/2011 17:14

I agree with Moondog.

Including take aways, cafe visits, ice cream at the park, etc?
For us about 25%, too, I should imagine. That is also more than my housing costs, but only because we are mortgage free.

Friends spend 100 quid/week on food (no eating out ever), for 2 middle aged fit adults (one with expensive food sensitivities), 2 voracious very fit teenagers + 3 primary school age very fit children.

That's still what.... 2 quid per person per day? Not a lot, really.

TheOriginalFAB · 21/04/2011 17:15

Roughly guessing what dh brings home I would say a third. Or 98% of what I have.

FattyAcid · 21/04/2011 17:52

From googling this question I get around 10% as an answer - but the google answers aren't recent and food has gone up a lot recently.

I've just been reading the other thread. Chasingsquirrels is right, it depends on your income. We spend about five percent but have a high joint income so its not that we don't spend a lot in the supermarket.

foxinsocks · 21/04/2011 18:28

V v little

Our food bills have never been huge tbh and we rarely have take aways

FattyAcid · 21/04/2011 19:24

foxy - vv little - like 1 or 2%?

About 15%. Joint income is around £2k and we're a family of 3.

pregnantpause · 21/04/2011 21:18

joint income of 1200pcm, 4 of us (one not weaned yet but as im bfing i eat her share!Grin)
i spend about £50 per week on food (last year this was 40 a weekHmm but my wages are the same ). So nearly 20%. After bills, almost all of whats left is spent on food then.

MrsJohnDeere · 21/04/2011 21:25

About 7-10%.

littleducks · 21/04/2011 21:31

We spend about 15-20% on groceries I think, I dont seperate out the food from laundry powder/toilet roll its budgetted for as a whole.

But it a big chunk of my income, not as huge as childcare 25% or rent 33% Sad but it still really affects me when prices rise. I have no idea what percentage petrol is but I know that is really rising

SquigglePigs · 21/04/2011 21:38

Around 15% depending on where I shop that month (that's just for myself and dp and the gannets also known as guinea-pigs).

LawrieMarlow · 21/04/2011 21:41

Not sure as H has just moved out and so food will be less but total household income will be less. Probably between 10 and 15% I think.

LawrieMarlow · 21/04/2011 21:44

That's for me, two DC and one cat. And also includes cleaning stuff, toilet paper, washing powder etc

TheBolter · 21/04/2011 21:50

Shitloads. About £600 per month. Around 15-20% I think. That does include other things though, such as household goods, presents, toiletries etc. We live in a semi-rural area so the supermarket and local food shops are where we spend most of our money. After tax, pensions, mortgage, bills, and peripherals all our money seems to be spent at the supermarket or the garage!

TheBolter · 21/04/2011 21:51

I would like to lower our food bills considerably, just not sure how! I think I like eating lovely food too much!

Xenia · 21/04/2011 22:31

Not that much as income is reasonably be high and we don't eat out often.
