gammon or ham and peas usually or a jacket potato

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 14/04/2011 19:26

Jacket potato, veggie sausages and peas/carrots/sugar snaps.

Missingfriendsandsad · 14/04/2011 19:26

nosepegs hehehehhhe

Cattleprod · 14/04/2011 19:26

Tomatoes.

Cauliflower cheese doesn't really need anything with it. Sometimes I put other stuff in it, like mange tout, mushrooms etc.

headfairy · 14/04/2011 19:27

I quite often do it with roast chicken in place of potatoes.

NettoSuperstar · 14/04/2011 19:27

Gammon and peas here too.

If I make as a complete meal I put leftover gammon or pancetta cubes in it, then top with tomato slices.

howdidthishappenthen · 14/04/2011 19:28

Oooh - now i want some cauli-cheese. With a thick slice of gammon.

longislandicetea · 14/04/2011 19:28

Sausages and peas. Also put smoked bacon in my cheese sause. It's a winner. YUM.

Or sausages and roasted veg (peppers, red onions, mushrooms, cherry toms)

iwantavuvezela · 14/04/2011 19:28

sausages and rice!

bristols · 14/04/2011 19:29

Sausage and mash. Every time!

longislandicetea · 14/04/2011 19:29

sorry sauce not sause Blush

Meow75 · 14/04/2011 19:31

We often have it with Toad in the hole, or like headfairy says it's a good accompaniment with Roast Chicken or Lamb - although we tend to have potatoes AS WELL!!!

Why are Meow75 and Mr Meow75 about 5 stone overweight again?!?! Hmm Hmm

Big crunchy green salad with little gem, avocado, salad onions, pine nuts, tomatoes, any fresh herbs lying around and a quite sharp dressing of mustard, vinegar and olive oil. I always seem to need the sharpness of the salad to cut through the cauliflower cheese.

If you need some protein, you can fry up some chopped-up bacon or pancetta and throw it into the salad too.

purplebrickroad · 14/04/2011 19:36

bacon

Dropdeadfred · 14/04/2011 19:36

I put mushrooms and bacon and broccoli in mine then you don't need anything else it's so filling.... Yum

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 14/04/2011 20:34

Ooh yes - a watercress and spinach salad with a really mustardy dressing is my favourite thing to have with macaroni cheese but have never tried it with cauliflower cheese!

Albrecht · 14/04/2011 21:53

Thanks for your delish suggestions. Ds is still little so can't overdo the salt but will definately try the salad ideas.

Was also trying to establish whether it is the main part or accompanying dish of a meal.

My Mum would do macaroni and cauliflower cheese - a big dish of each, just served as-is. That seemed normal growing up but is a little bit plain to me now. As a student we used to mix the two together in a dish and add bacon/sweetcorn/tomatos/all sorts - essentially a big pasta and cauliflower bake.

Nowadays I'd probably do a mix of the two and maybe serve with sausages or salad, depending on how greedy I felt.

missmartha · 15/04/2011 08:04

I don't like it as an accompanying vegetable. I think it's horrible with gravy, but that's a personal thing, so I would never have it with a roast.

I like cauliflower cheese as a lunch dish with maybe a little green salad or better yet, some grilled tomatoes for a bit of bite.

littleducks · 15/04/2011 08:12

I cook it with a roast dinner, as did my mum and nana.

I have made it as a main with macoroni in too but find it too plain. The kids will eat it like that but I feel like something is missing, even if I eat it with sweet chilli sauce to try and find a 'kick' in it

gorionine · 15/04/2011 08:15

vegetarian saussages and salad

ColonelBrandonsBiggestGroupie · 15/04/2011 10:15

Agree that cauliflower cheese and gravy is an abomination! :)

Some people on here claim to serve macaroni cheese with baked beans....shudder.
