Marjoram as substitute for oregano

Just about to cook a recipe that requires dried oregano. I have run out, but have dried marjoram. It doesn't smell that dissimilar to oregano. Anyone know if it would make a good substitute?

I would go for it

It's close enough, you should be fine. It will taste different, but the herbs are from the same family so the recipe should still work out fine.

It's the same family of plants. It won't taste the same, but I don't think it'll ruin your dish. Try it.

Great, many thanks. Didn't know it was from the same family, definitely sounds appropriate. It's for a tomatoey Greek beef stew that cooks slowly so I'm sure it will have a similar effect.
