Fake Le Creuset

My mum bought me a "Le Creuset" casserole for my birthday. (not as mean as it might sound to some - I LOVE cooking and have always wanted one!) Anyway, I was quite surprised as I know that my mum and dad don't like spending huge amounts of money on stuff and just love a bargain, but I also know that it is very rare to get Le Creuset on any kind of special offer that makes it affordable! The dish they have bought me is HUGE (it just about fits in my oven and weighs 8kgs!) and when I found this out I was even more surprised as I know full-price they would be way beyond my parents spending. I unpacked it tonight and saw that it has no markings on it whatsoever. Neither does the box have any kind of markings nor did it contain any usage or care instructions. I have obviously come to the conclusions that it is a fake - well, not actually a fake as it probably wasn't actually sold as Le Creuset, but my mum just assumed because of the style and colour etc..., but you know what I mean.

I'm in a bit of a quandry now - I can't possibly tell my parents - they would be gutted and probably really embarrassed too, but I am also slightly concerned about actually using it. The whole reason I wanted a Le Creuset was to use it on both the stove and in the oven and now I'm not sure that this pot I've got is suitable for that. I hate the thought of it just sitting there unused, but neither do I want to take any risks with cookware. (fwiw I live in a different country to my parents and they only come and visit for a few days maybe once a year at most so it's not like they'll be round for Sunday lunch watching me use it every week) I don't know where she bought it, but I would guess that TK Maxx may be a possibility as it is local to them. Anyone else got a similar kind of pot that's not actually Le Creuset?

I should think if it's a cast iron dish you should be fine to use it in the oven and on the hob. Le Creuset aren't the only company who make such things :)

watch out for a big wake up call ....

the only reason le creuset is so expensive is for the name

you can get a pot for £10 that does the same job and works on both hob and in oven just like le creuset does

maybe you could write the name on in felt tip to feel better? Grin

yes i agree.

le creuset are not the only decent manufacturers, plenty give them a run for their money imo

le creuset is a fashion TM. There are many companies in France who make similar stuff which is excellent - and at least 1/3rd the price.

LovelyDaffs · 11/04/2011 22:58

You can get le creuset in tkmaxx btw.

Also if you desperately want LC a bit cheaper you find them sometimes in outlet shopping villages. There's one in Portsmouth.

If it's 8kg it'll be cast iron, and if it's cast iron it'll be OK on hob and stove. Forget about the brand name - you have a lovely big casserole and just enjoy using it.

Hello
I have a not le cruset le cruset type dish.

Its a lovely blue dish.

Its fab and is definitely as good as any le cruset dish i have ever used. I use it on hob and in oven. The box made it clear it was not le cruset brand and was "everything" safe. though.

I love it and if i saw the same brand again (same lovely colour) Id get more.

Le Crustet is super expensive... mine was much cheaper (so affordable for my sister to by for me) and is the nicest colour ive ever seen. I LOVE it, and use it week in week out, and wouldnt swap it for the le cruset one thats the same if you paid me!

i have a cast iron pot from HOF - less than half the price of le cruset - i works lovely!
