dairy-free cheese alternative?

My DS1 (just 3) is currently under a paediatrician for various issues including weight loss and tummy problems. The dietician has helped us to go gluten and lactose free in the last few months and, although things have improved, there are still issues. Consequently, she now wants us to try going dairy-free altogether. However, cheese (the lactofree stuff in the last few months) has been a great way to get calories into DS1 in the last few months, either on gluten-free pasta or in gluten-free cheese toasties. Anyone know if and where you can buy an alternative that looks and tastes like cheese? It does worry me that I am filling him full of stuff that you wouldn't normally give kids, but I don't have much choice at the moment.

Redwood supermelting is good, again h&b will have it. The only one that does actually melt. Or you can use nutritional yeast flakes in a white sauce, that makes it a bit cheesy. Years since I read it but try the uncheese cookbook by Joanne stepaniak (sp?)

Thanks, I've bought the cheese sauce mix in Sainsburys recently and it's kind of okay. However, DS1 particularly likes grated cheese on pasta, rather than a cheese sauce and cheese toasties really need a chunk of cheese too. Will check out Redwood supermelting.

This site sells lactose free cheese. There are lots of gluten free foods available too including bread and breakfast cereals.
