OK, I need help recreating something I used to eat as a child.

It was something my grandmother's friend used to make, and I had it at her house every time we visited her - sadly she and my grandmother are long gone and my mum has no idea what I am talking about.

I have recently become obsessed with eating this (think the fact I am pregnant may have something to do with it Grin) but I only have a vague memory of it.

So anyway, it was a sort of thick pale orange coloured dip/spread and we used to eat it with (I think it must have been) rye bread - and also spread on Jacobs crackers. I'm pretty sure my gran's friend was from Eastern or Central Europe, quite possibly she was also Jewish, so maybe it is a traditional dish from that area/culture.

I suppose the orange colour could have been paprika?? If my memory is correct it also had little green bits in it... and it was very yummy :)

Anyone any idea what it could have been and how to make it?

Was it made by your grandmother and her friend, or bought? It sounds not dissimilar to a kind of dodgy cheese spread we used to eat in South Africa. Was delicious to us little kiddies, and very popular... And you could get versions with extra things in it for flavour...

The curd cheese creme cheese suggestion sounds the most plausible, I do remember it being creamy, but the houmous dip does look v like it... But I don't think it tasted like houmous or smoked salmon, I know those flavours well and they don't ring a bell. I think the flavour was quite subtle, just can't put my finger on what it could have actually tasted of.

lellibobs if you could post the recipe that would be fantastic then I can at least try and see if it is the right sort of thing.

Pretty sure it was home made Bling, but maybe she just decanted it out of the packaging into a bowl to be gentile Confused. I definitely remember it always being in a little blue china bowl anyway, stupid things that you remember! I couldn't have been more than 4 or 5 at the time, so it was a long time ago.

Okay I've often thought about giving this a go so let me know how it turns out please...

500g cream cheese and same of curd cheese
4-5 tablespoons of capers
8 chopped cornichons
3 teasp paprika
Salt and pepper
2 teasp caraway seeds
2 teasp French mustard

Beat the two cheeses together then stir in everything else. Turn into a two pint pudding basin lined with cling film. Place in fridge to se twith heavy weight on top
After a few hours turn out. Drizzle over 1-2 tablespoons of vegetable oil mixed with a Pinch of paprika

Gosh this sounds like it makes a lot!

Serve with black bread black biscuits or poppy sprinkled bagels.

Good luck Tabitha!

Thanks lellibobs, we are off to the shops later - planning to make it for lunch tomorrow so will let you know how it goes! I'm so excited, hopefully this is the one!
I must confess that I don't really know what curd cheese is - is it cottage cheese?? Hoping that the delicatessen or cheese stall will know anyway!
