Recipe for beef mince without tomatoes?

AngelDog · 04/04/2011 09:22

Can anyone recommend a recipe using minced beef which doesn't involve tomatoes? I can only think of beefburgers so far.

Ideally I'm looking for something I can do in the slow cooker, but any suggestions would be welcome. :)

Savoury mince-just no tomatoes. Onion, celery , carrots, garlic, bacon, mince , water and bubble away. Add stock cube, herbs as required. Top with dumplings yum

ShatnersBassoon · 04/04/2011 09:32

Keema curry.

AngelDog · 04/04/2011 09:37

Mmm, both sound like tasty suggestions.

I've never made dumplings before - do you cook them on top of the mince in the slow cooker?

I put them on top of mince in oven as i like them browned but i think you are supposed to just boil them so you probably could (i have never used a slow cooker) I use recipe off atora suet box -Half suet to SR flour and some water -Easy peasy

Shepherds/cottage pie?

AngelDog · 05/04/2011 20:11

Thanks. :)

I love shepherd's cottage pie, but sadly my DS (who's the one who can't have tomatoes) is not a potato fan. :(

Dumplings are your answer then ,quicker than peeling potatoes too and you can make them heby if liked

AngelDog · 06/04/2011 13:57

I'll give them a go then. :)

If he doesn't like potato do you think he'd eat half potato/half celeriac or carrot or swede mash? Doesn't help if it's the texture he doesn't like, but it would sweeten/change the taste.

AngelDog · 06/04/2011 19:28

Thanks for the suggestion, suzikettles, but I think it's partly texture. The only sort of potato he likes is chips Hmm and he doesn't like mashed anything else which is rather irritating - unless it's as a pasta sauce.

Mince sauce with WINE! I also love driced porcini mushrooms, for the flavour and texture

Or work chopped onions and herbs into the mince make patties with a little flour and egg, then grill or fry them as mini-kebabs.

A Sloppy Joe is mince in a hamburger bun - quite tasty and different in texture.

Just a thought with the dumplings. My mum mixes a bit of Paxo in when she makes dumplings and it makes them very tasty!! If you made a savoury pork mince, I think the sage and onion flavour would go particularly well.

Some ideas off BBC Good Food, never made them but find all their recipes work fine!

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/531658/italian-meatloaf
www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/3428/spicy-meatballs
www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/843636/minced-beef-cobbler

I heart that website! I've also done a dish my sil calls marzetti which was pasta, mince, condensed mushroom soup and condensed tomato soup - it is much tastier than it sounds! Brown the mince with some onion if you want, then 1 can of each of the other stuff plus the pasta, top with cheese and cook for a while.

MikeRotch · 06/04/2011 19:56

yes easily
just use water for the fluid and stock

DoodleAlley · 06/04/2011 20:13

Meat balls as mentioned previously ace.

On a theme there's also burgers.

Don't do minced beef and baked bean casserole - it haunted my childhood!!

You could make a shepherds/cottage pie and top it with slices/discs of potato like a hotpot, and see what your ds makes of that (the tops ones would go crispy, which is vaguely chip like if you stretch the definition!)

My substitute for tomatoes in spag Bol for DS when he couldn't eat them was, grated carrots, pureed cooked beetroot( the vac pack kind, not in vinegar) and extra red wine.

You can also buy something called nomato sauce but quite hard to get hold of.

What's the reason for no tomatoes, dislike or allergy or something else?

AngelDog · 07/04/2011 21:45

He likes tomatoes, but the acid really irritates the eczema on his face - even if I slather it with cream before the meal.

I like the carrots/beetroot idea - DS isn't overly keen on vegetetables but is happy to eat them in things.

I'm liking the sliced potato idea too.

How about curried mince with coconut milk for the liquid? That's delicious.

mogs0 · 10/04/2011 23:43

I agree with the sliced potato suggestion. My ds went through a long phase of not liking mash. I started making cottage pie and fish pie with sliced potatoes on the top and he decided that it wasn't so bad after all!

Another thing I do occasionally is add some grated cheese to mash.
