Recipe for delicious biscuits that hold their shape well when cooked?

Can anyone please recommend a recipe for biscuits that keep their shape in the oven? I make iced biscuits using the biscuiteers recipe book for inspiration. Their recipes hold their shape very well but I'm not thrilled with the flavour. I'm not fussy about the type (plain, chocolate, Ginger, whatever).

Thanks in as advance.

I love these and they hold their shape very well.

CITRUS BISCUITS

100g softened butter
75g castor sugar
1 separated egg
200g plain flour
grated rind of 1 orange
grated rind of 1 lemon
grated rind of 1 lime
2-3tbsp orange juice

Cream together butter & sugar until light & fluffy, gradually beat in egg yolk.

Sift flour into creamed mixture, mix evenly until combined, add orange/lemon/lime rinds to the mixture and enough orange juice to make a soft dough.

Roll out dough, cut out shapes, place on baking trays, brush with egg white, sprinkle with sugar, (egg white and sugar optional, I don't usually bother) bake in preheated oven at 200C for 12-15mins.

There is a recipe for 321 biscuits in the mn biscuit section (recipes) that I tried today and yesterday - our dinosaurs still look like dinosaurs - well they did until we ate them all up.

Thank you both. Those citrus ones sound yummy so will give them a try.

Jamaisjedors - did they hold their shape completely or splurge at all? Sorry to sound picky but done if the designs I'm making a fairly intricate do I need a recipe that stats exactly the same when it cooks. Biscuiteers recipes do (but don't taste that great IMO). I haven't tried any other recipes yet, may give the mn recipe a try too.

Nigella does butter cut-out cookies, the're in her Domestic Goddess book. They are delicious and hold their shape really well. viciousange.blogspot.com/2006/12/butter-cut-out-cookies-christmas-treast.html recipe here. They don't last long in our house - I make them without the icing unless for a birthday.

Thanks Millie. They look good, will give them a try Smile

Yes their shape is perfect, haven't puffed or moved at all.

martha stewart does good cut out cookies in her cupcake book. I got a lot of compliments on these ones. see here

Thanks crapbarry (love the name btw). Do you use granulated sugar as the recipe suggests, or castor? One of the biscuiteers recipes suggests granulated but it left the biscuits looking speckly and cheap (I prefer a smoother look for some reason). I don't think it does any harm to substitute castor, but thought I might as well ask.

I'm pretty sure I used granulated - but can't see the harm in using castor. The freezing step was really important, and I kept a close eye on them in the oven - my first batch burned because I forgot my oven has a mind of its own! I iced them with lemony water icing/glace icing, they were yummy! even better when they'd gone a little soft after I left them overnight sandwiched with jam.
