Christmas food

My husband contributed 30 pounds towards Christmas food that my parents's-in-law cooked last Christmas. I didnt spend Christmas with his family as I was away then. He always went to his parent's for Christmas dinner but he didnt contribute any money for the previous 3 years that I was with him. I don't know if this is something he will continue to do or just this time. Do other people sometime contribute some money for family Christmas food?

In our family normal to ask people to bring various big-ticket things along with them..... a pudding, a baked ham, a case of wine or bottle of scotch etc... than to specifically ask for cash. Having said that, when my parents spent a few days with us last Christmas, my Mum insisted on transferring about £50 into my account and my Dad paid for panto tickets! On balance then, I'd say it's polite to offer something - either cash or food - rather than nothing.
