Cornflour 6 months out of date-should be fine, right?

I'm making bilberry buns and need to add some to the filling. Looks ok, not damp or anything.

There's not a lot in cornflour to go off and it doesn't seem to attract weevils like regular flour. I've had a box of cornflour in the cupboard for years and only just finished it. No ill effects so far.

Ok, great, thanks.
Now if only the dough was raising as it should Angry Only been an hour-shall I give it another 30 minutes-1hr?

Is it not moving at all? Should have risen a little after an hour. Was the yeast fresh?

winnybella · 31/03/2011 09:45

No, dry. It's sitting on the radiator, too. Hmm.

I've used cornflour several years out of date no problem. Yeast on the other hand is a bit temperamental. What are you making?

Grumpla · 31/03/2011 09:46

Oh buns, I see.

Have you got an airing cupboard? That's always a good place. Radiator might be too hot on base & still draughty on top iykwim.

Chil1234 · 31/03/2011 09:50

Was the dried yeast reasonably new? i.e. not been sitting in an open tin or packet for a while?

winnybella · 31/03/2011 10:12

No, new packet.
I've added stuff (yeast, salt, milk, egg, oil, sugar etc) according to the recipe.
Weird.
I've baked bread before and the dough has risen quite quickly.
Oh, crap. I've already defrosted the bilberries.

Grumpla- no, no airing cupboard. What if I cover the bowl on top-would that keep the heat in iyswim?

Or maybe I should put the bowl in a pot filled with warm water?

Arrgh.
