I am desperate to spend less on our food shopping so have devised meal plans based on what is already in cupboards/freezer. I am on the second week now so looking forward to an end to my self-enforced supermarket ban next weekend. Am going to dream meal plan for next week and would love ideas. Ours for this week:

Sunday-lamb casserole
Monday-tuna neopolitana
Tues-vegetarian enchilladas & salad
Weds-bolognaise bake
Thurs-Prawn stir fry & noodles
Fri-freezer roulette
Sat-Sausages & mash.

I have found that shopping in my local greengrocers and butchers is saving me a lot of money... I can't get all my shopping in these two shops and have to still do a small shop in the supermarket but have been very surprised at how high the prices are in the supermarkets compared to the local shop

Eggs for 6 medium eggs - greengrocers 69p tesco £1.00 for economy and 6 large £1.68

Pinnapple 50p from greengrocers tesco reduced from £1.50 to £1.00 for same size fruit

caulilower 79p greengrocer £1.30 tesco

over the week it adds up on each item if you pay 50p more on this and that. I just can't afford to pay those types of prices in tesco (sainsbury is even more expensive) It may be a little easier to go to one shop rather than greengrocer, butcher and then stop at supermarket to finish list - but it is certainly saving me money. I do go armed with a list and only buy what is on the list

cottage pie with cauliflower and broc with mint gravy.
left over cottage pie with vegtables and mint gravy
chicken curry with rice
Pasta with broc, pesto and creme frache and grated cheese
chicken pieces roasted with cauliflower, broc and peas, yorkshire puddings, gravy and either mash or roast pots
Home made tomato and two cheese pizza
omelette with cheese and baked beans

Have made some english breakfast muffins to go with poached eggs and a little ham for breakfast, weetbix and toast, dippy egg and soldiers with yogurt and honey, then finish the week with eggy bread or eggy muffins and fruit.

have made some oat biccies today and orange and chocolate chip fariy cakes for pack ups, big bag of sulatans and put those in little pots and have made soem white milk rolls for pack ups with tuna and mayo.

Smile nail my lists have been a bit alternative over the last few weeks. I make mince go further using beans/lentils and veg. The meat in my plan is already in the freezer but we are going more and more pulse/veg/fish based.

ivy - you are def right. DH gets eggs from someone with a small holding and an egg "problem"! at work for v little, so am trying to include more eggs in our diet. We had savoury and sweet pancakes today and DD loves eggs scrambled with all sorts in whcih is good. Fruit in Sainsbos is Shock at the moment, greengrocer is def cheaper.

I must get better at making stuff for packed lunches. I have already moved to making more pasta/couscous salads etc as rolls/bread are so expensive.

Would you mind sharing your muffin recipe?

look at this thread for making your own bread

I brought a 12.5kg bag of wholemeal bread flour from a local mill for £8 and that included delivery - it means my bread cost 35p for the flour for each loaf - I took delivery in the last week of January and have about a 1/3 of the bag left. Even white standard bread flour in tesco is 50 p here to compete with lidl flour at 50p a bag of white - which will make two loaves

Have you tried cooking a huge batch of beef ragu? I use beef shin or skirt. Incredibly cheap cuts, but frankly THE tastiest.

Get yourself 2-3 Kilos of it. Cut in to 1" cubes, toss in seasoned flour and brown in batches. Set oven at 140. Meanwhile cut 3 or 4 carrots, same in celery , couple of medium onions and 3-4 cloves garlic. Big, small, whatever. When you've browned all the meat, put it to one side and then soften the veg over medium heat for 10 mins or so. Lob the meat back in along with 2 tins plum tomatoes per kilo, a good glug of red if you have, couple of sprigs of rosemary, 1-2 GOOD beef stock cubes or a couple of those Knorr stock pots and maybe a splash of water - see what you think. Lid on, shove in the oven for a good 4-5 hours.

I serve it in lots of forms:

tagliatelle
root mash
mash
rice
rigatoni
spag
out the pan before it hits the plate
chunks of nice bread

As a rule 1kg, 2 tins toms, 1 carrot, 1 cel and sm onion etc etc will give you 2 healthy adult portions and a couple of medium non fussy children ones. Probs a baby too.

Another good, filling, cheap one is Irish Stew

flour some lamb - neck, or stewing.

layer up in a casserole lamb, 3 sliced carrots, 3 sliced leek, 2 sliced onion, 1cm sliced potatoes - depends on size as to how many (natch) - 3 or so layers from 1.5kg lamb, pour cold water over to JUST cover and throw a small handful of pearl barley over. Bring gently to boil, skim off any scum (sometimes lots, sometimes none) and turn heat right down, leave for a couple of hours. Can also chuck in the oven at about 150 for same sort of time. Check and season with S and P. One pot supper, v. tasty...

With all your eggs....Toad in the Hole with an onion gravy and some peas or something? Always a hit with my kids - big and small alike

Another easy one, not sure of spelling but it's a maltese dish called Frorja...

Basically: cook 80-100g spag per person. Drain, rinse well under cold water. Whisk 1 egg p/p and as much grated cheese as you want really - maybe matchbox size each plus an extra one. I also like to throw in some chopped spring onions and chopped, deseeded tomatoes. Add spaghetti and give it a good stir. Melt some butter/oil in a heavy based frying pan, chuck in mix. Cook over medium heat til medium brown, slide onto a plate and flip over to do other side. It's probably about 6min either side. Cut into pizza wedges. Delicious hot or cold, I usually through some salad on the plate for good measure and ruin it all with a fat blob of ketchup. CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP and very damn tasty.

I had to be queen of frugality after my divorce when my older DCs were small - I can indeed still make a chicken last a week and not be hungry! So anymore you want, just say. I could write a flipping book with some of my inventions!!!!

Meal plan for this week:

Mon - chicken curry (from leftovers)
Tue: Sticky ribs, roasted gnocchi, green veg
Wed - turkey meatballs and rice
Thu - stir fried quorn pieces, noodles, veg
Fri - tuna and sweetcorn pasta
Sat - sausage and mash and beans
Sun - not sure yet, possibly a roast

Trying to be a bit more frugal but also have a couple of "nice" meals a week - and a meat free day.
