Ideas for a finger buffet for a 10 year old's party, please

I want to do very vaguely grown up food for my dd's party. She is having 12 guests. But it must all be finger food, and nothing that's going to take hours to cook as I really don't enjoy fiddling around with little mini bits of food. Also must cater for four vegetarians.

Mini vegetable spring rolls with soy sauce to dip.

MrsShrekTheThird · 26/03/2011 17:06

bread sticks
chicken goujons
veg - carrots, celery, etc - in sticks with dips
little sausages (probably NOT on sticks, lol)
garlic bread / baguettes, served in a basket for them to help themselves
cherry tomatoes - they adore them
snack size sausage rolls
prawns?

Mum's go to IcelandWink

Frozen buffet food to reheat, ta-da!

Vegetable or chicken samosas.

Mini Pizzas:

sliced bread
Tom Purée
dried oregano
cheddar/parmesan mix grated
(whatever extra or not)

cut the crusts off the bread, roll thin-ish with rolling pin and then use 6 or 7cm cutter - should get 3 or 4 out of each.

Spread thin layer of purée on each, sprinkle oregano on, whatever extras (I use ham, sliced onion, mushrooms, whatever) cheese on top. 190 for about 10 minutes.

Mini Sausage puffs:

1 sheet ready rolled puff pasty
chipolatas/veggie ones too
honey/grainy mustard

3/4 cook the sausages after mixing in the honey/mustard mix. Cool.

Cut strips slightly narrower, but ½cm longer than sausages, and wrap and seal with beaten egg. Brush the lot with egg, 200 for 10/12 minutes, may take a bit more - could be less though.

Mini tartlets:

Ready rolled puff pastry.

Whatever you want!!!

Cut out circles with 6 or 7cm cutter. Put on baking sheet. top with anything - sliced cherry toms, lump of goat's cheese or mozzarella, onions that have been fried down with some sugar, thyme, garlic and splash of balsamic - possibilities endless depending on what they like! Leave a 1/2cm round the edge of each, brush with beaten egg. 200 for 10ish minutes.

Smoked Salmon cheat blinis

Make a drop scone batter with:

4oz SR flour
seasoning
tablespoon chopped dill
1 large egg
1/2 tsp baking powder
enough milk to make it in to a thick cream dropping consistency.

Make drop scones. When cool, top with Philli, smoked salmon, dill and tiny triangle of lemon.

Said scones also good without the dill, but whizz roughly some smoked mackerel, philli, squeeze lemon juice and seasoning. Dollop of that on each blini and some cucumber if you like too.

Got lots more if you want others....

Fruit kebabs with chocolate dipping sauce, nice pizzas with fresh basil on top, humous with breadsticks, celery, carrot etc. Really simple stuff that looks nice.

iceland frozen buffet food !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YUK - may as well fill a few dishes with saturated fats, sugar and salt and let the kids dip lolllies in

theagedparent · 26/03/2011 17:35

Roast potatoes

MrClaypole · 26/03/2011 17:40

chicken kebabs:

Soak some skewers in water
Mix up some greek yoghurt and lots of chopped fresh mint
Chop up some chicken breasts and mix the chicken in the yoghurt
Pop the chicken pieces on skewers and cook in oven

For the veggies you could stick some pesto on courgette/aubergine/pepper etc and put them on skewers too.

i've mentioned it on here before but i've been making pizzas with those warbies square wraps - they take like 8 mins and can be cut in to fingers to make a nice treat.

how about mini indian snacks? bhajis etc? with raita dip and mango chutney?

bigTillyMint · 27/03/2011 14:02

I would avoid providing dips for a buffet. The guests will be very pleased with
a variety of:
Sandwiches (do not underestimate their appeal) White and brown bread!!
chicken nuggets goujons
mini pizza/savoury crumpets a la boosmummie suggestion
Split bridge rolls with toppings (an open sandwich)
Cheese and pineapple on sticks (at 10 they have not seen this)
Cherry toms, cucumber sticks, crisps
Vegetarian platter from the above.
Fairy cakes, jam tarts.
A few things done well is better than too much choice.
Avoid the dips Grin

boosmummie · 27/03/2011 21:37

Driftwood have you had some dip disasters in your time....Grin

pointydog · 27/03/2011 21:53

Last year the dds both had afternon tea type spreads for the food. I bought those card disposable cakes stands. It looked Fantastic.

SImple little sandwiches and sausage rolls for the savouries.

Then we had things like bite-sized blondies, chocolate fridge cake, mini meringues and raspberries, big whirly cup cakes on the top.

Depends how you feel about baking, I suppose.

Also served mocktails in plastic martini glasses with umbrellas and whatnot.

Driftwood999 · 27/03/2011 22:03

Not what you would call a disaster, plenty of experience though. I just think dips are best avoided for very young guests on the grounds that a) as a buffet they will be moving around b) sharing a dip bowl is a health hazard c) an unnecessary embellishment given that keeping it simple is best so that the guests (in this case aged 10) feel comfortable.
