Breakfast Ideas Needed

We're vegan, so no dairy, eggs etc.

DD (2 years, 10 months) has always been a good eater at breakfast time. Until a couple of months ago, she was happy with porridge made with Kara milk every morning, but started to go off it so had a couple of Weetabix instead.

Unfortunately she's now started to refuse that too, which is very frustrating. Yesterday she had toast with almond butter, which again she usually loves but it was a struggle yesterday.

Does anyone have any suggestions of healthy (iron, B12, calcium-rich; low in salt and sugar) cereals that I could try her with, please?

Many thanks, all! :)

What about fresh fruit?

Smoothes (you can add a handfull of oats to make it more filling)

Oatcakes

Are you giving her the same breakfast everyday? Try and alternate between the ones you've already got and the suggestions you get on here. I would get very fed up eating the same thing every day.

Thanks, Littlepurpleprincess.

I would do too, but she's been happy with that until now. It's a shame because I could put all sorts of nuts and oils in her porridge. Oh well, she's growing up I suppose!

She has a lot of fruit already but oats is a good idea. Thanks for that.

I'd like to give her something enriched with B12 and iron, which a lot of cereals are. Kara milk is also calcium-rich. Need to get some more calories into her breakfast though. She used to like having nuts and seeds in her porridge.

She's actually eating her Weetabix at the moment, so that's a good sign!

I do love oats, we go through tons of em Grin

BelligerentGhoul · 26/03/2011 12:29

You actually sound like you are advertising Kara milk to me, OP.

GoldenHaze · 26/03/2011 17:37

I'm not advertising it Confused. It's just that every time I mention it on MN people ask me what it is. Saves time to add a link, that's all.

How about toast with hummous? Or oatcakes/ricecakes with almond butter and slices of banana?

I think you can get organic versions of shreddies as well to avoid the nestle ones. They are quite low in sugar and salt, similar to weetabix.

Or if she's not wanting oats as porridge, try soaking them in her milk or some apple juice, mixing in whatever chopped nuts or dried/fresh fruit she likes. Ground almonds are good in this if she won't take whole ones.

baked apples with sultanas and spice if you like - doesn't tkae to long if you have a microwave.

Apricot flapjacks : allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/3846/apricot-oat-flapjacks.aspx I swap oj for water and add a little more water

I have a just turned 3 year old, who is vegetarian. His breakfast is usually a bowl of Lizi's Organic Granola. I use this as a base and add pumkin seeds, sunflower seeds, two types of nuts, some dried apricots and prunes and lastly, fresh berries. It is very nice and he loves it. I think I have most of his food groups covered. This granola has a low GI and does not have added sugar.

Mesa Sunrise is lovely? Marmite on toast with non-dairy spread?

BelligerentGhoul · 27/03/2011 21:30

Okay GH - I apologise: must be getting overly suspicious in my increasingly old age. :)

Wholemeal toast with one of those pates from Holland and Barratt? Maybe with fruit on the side?

Love the suggestion of baked apple for breakfast - I may have to try that one myself.
