I have a piece of brisket beef for sunday and wondered if you can cook in the slow cooker? How long for? Do you brown it off first?

Thanks

This recipe doesn't suggest browning the outside first but I would have thought it would be a good option add some colour and flavour to the finished dish.

I have always wanted to try this recipe.
But I haven't got a slow cooker :(

allthree - they are very cheap and often reduced. why don't you get one? i love shuvving things in mine whilst i eat breakfast and then having a meal ready in the evening when i've lost all my energey

I buy brisket often and do it the slow cooker, no browning needed and it's delicious.

in fact I dont brown any meat except sausages.

LindaLaPlumeDeMaTente · 26/03/2011 19:17

I normally brown mine

Thanks all- I will let you know what it was like when I cook it tomorrow!

You are right Dreaming, will have to do it soon. #2 on the way so will likely be a big help.
See lots of cheap ones around, but wonder whether the big brands are better/last longer?

I did a lot of research recently on slow cookers and would definitely recommend one with an Auto setting. This means it does a high setting for 1 hour before dropping to low. I have got a Breville one.

Toadinthehole · 27/03/2011 05:07

I use a lot of brisket, and I always slow cook it - normally in stews, although occasionally I cook it as a piece - the longer and slower the better.

I normally brown it but if I'm short of time I don't bother. I find it doesn't make a huge difference.

Looking forward to hearing how you got on.

agree auto setting good and obviously high and low and removable pot. mine is a swan one that i bought about 25 years ago.

allthree - personally i'd go for a cheap one - i think mine was pretty cheap.

AllThreeWays · 28/03/2011 06:48

I have borrowed my partners, has high low and auto, will play with it and see how that recipe turns out.
Will report back :)

Ok just did the roast beef recipe, was amazing! So moist and tender, the meat fell apart, and the sauce make fantastic gravy.
Must buy a slow cooker!

thats great allthree. we use it a lot for curry as well (patak's paste and tin of toms and onion and meat) and also beef bit of a lasagne.
