Organic food

My son is just 2 years old and I find it very difficult to find good easy food for him. I have been buying organic vegetables and meat and cooking my own meals. It often freeze these as I am a working Mum and really find it hard to find the time to cook fresh all the time. Does anyone else do this and if so, what do you cook?

Hi, yes I cook & freeze meals for my DD 28 mths. I use Gina Fords weaning book & rotate several of the recipes in there.

I cook a batches of the following -

macaroni cheese with spinach & sweetcorn or peas or both

Spagetti bolognese, with carrots & any spare veg

Fish pie +/- salmon or prawns + cod & peas & corn

Tuna pasta with peas & sweetcorn

lentil Shepherds pie w/ sweet potato or normal potato topping

Fish cakes - veggies

Pork balls + tomato sauce ( Dd eats about 2-3) serve with wholemeal pasta

Cor - I am a domestic goodess !!

When everything is cool I put in little pots, they are called first steps I think & then freeze.

Any good ?

Hi, Yes you are a domestic goddess! These sound great, do you always use organic ingredients & if so, where do you purchase these, from a supermarket or farm shop?

Hi there, I always use organic meat which I either buy from a farm (where they are raised) a few miles from me or a farm shop about a mile away. I also always buy organic dairy - which tends to come from the supermarket . I try to buy local free range eggs otherwise they are organic too.
For veg, anything grown in the ground is normally organic, but do try to pick up veg from the local farm shop which is trying to get local produce, although invariably comes from Kent.

I'm a bit anal about the organic stuff & try to buy english produce as well.

I make homemade puddings as I'm fed up with not being able to pronounce the ingredients on the back of the boxes

where do you buy yours from ? Also, would you like any of the recipes ?

i also buy organic dairy from the supermarket, but buy as much local organic produce as i can, failing that it is organic from wherever, and as a last resort organic from the supermarket.
My difficulty is i have 2 dds who like to eat differently , dd1 (3) likes a buffet 'cold style' pick and mix i.e. a little pile of this and a little pile of that and none touching the other, each pile eaten in turn!!! (how anal!!) and dd2 (1) likes lasagne, fish pie, shepherds pie, stew, casserole, pasta bakes etc... when served with fish pie this week my dd1 said...'no mumy, i would like a clean prawn, not a dirty one...' as she pushed a prawn covered in white sauce and mash around her plate! have to take it in turns so that they each get a meal they enjoy atleast every other night!

my friends little girl also likes food 'buffet' style...they're funny aren't they ?!
Liek the dirty prawn story My Dd had prawns in fish pie the other day, I don't even think she noticed it !

Hi I buy my ingredients from the farm shop nearby, but also from the farmers markets when they are on. I have brought from the supermarket, but the range is still prohibative and not alway brilliant. Mojomummy, I would really like your recipies if that is possible.

I must admit, I have not tried to feed prawns to my little one, but I should introduce them. I like the comment about the dirty prawns!

I tend to find that finger food goes down well at tea time as he usually has a big lunch and pudding and is really only interested in lighter food at the end of the day

Hi Jimmy2, shall I cat you or shall I photocopy & send them to you ? & which ones would you like ?

We went to a farmer market a couple of weeks ago. I bought too much double cream & cream fraiche & have only just got rid of it - I think I've put on a couple of pounds !

i think prawns are better in things, I think DD may have picked them out...even though I tried to hide them in the fish pie !

Also make a good casserole which we all eat together with chickpeas & veggie sausages, yum !
