How on Earth does brown rice have more fat...

...than white rice? Confused

Just been looking at the comparisons and the white rice has 1.1 grams of fat per 75 grams, and brown rice has 2.1 grams per 75 grams

I thought it was supposed to be healthier?

rice is a seed, seeds often have fat in, but in white rice everything but the starchy bit has been removed.

brown rice is still healthier: you are talking about a tiny amount of fat there, it's probably 'good' fat anyway, and you get the benefit of all that fibre and vitamins.

It's the oil in the husk which is the brown bit.

Thank you both :)

It's more DP who is freaking out about it (high cholesterol) than me

It's the kernel of the grain that contains the fat.... It gets removed in the refining process because food with oil in it means a shorter shelf-life. Applies to any 'white' grain food... white flour, white bread, white pasta... pure starch, endless shelf-life, but low in nutrition as a result of having all the goodness processed out of them. So your DP seriously wants to reduce his cholesterol he should not worry about the vitamin-rich vegetable oil in a grain of brown rice. Reduce consumption of meat and dairy products, by all means.

Switching to more whole foods rich in fibre... like wholemeal bread, brown rice, wholemeal pasta, whole porridge oats... getting down to a healthy weight, stopping smoking/drinking and taking regular, daily exercise are essential for cholesterol reduction. Enjoy brown rice. Good luck
